TI intros single-chip DockPort technology destined for laptops and tablets

TI intros singlechip DockPort tailored for laptops and tablets

The DockPort standard is only just getting off the ground with support in AMD's Elite Performance processors. TI could soon make the technology fly, however: its new (if awkwardly named) HD3SS2521 controller handles all the tasks of DockPort on a single chip. The hardware is both simpler and cheaper than past multi-chip designs, and makes it easier for laptops and tablets to deliver DisplayPort video, USB 3.0 and power through a single cable. Whether or not we see more DockPort-equipped mobile gadgets is another matter. While the TI chip is available today, device builders still have to choose DockPort over a more established standard like Intel's Thunderbolt.

Which iPad Mini Rumor To Believe? Maybe Both

I love watching dueling rumors.

We?ll see an?iPad mini with Retina display before the end of the year.

No, we?ll see one more?mini with the normal display, but a faster processor.

iPad MiniActually, what?s interesting about these two articles is that, if you dig a bit deeper and pay attention, they might actually be saying the same thing.

While the headline for The Next Web piece says, ?Apple will reportedly use retina display from Samsung for its next iPad Mini to be launched in Q4,? let?s do that digging I mentioned. First quote from the Next Web Article:

?Apple suppliers in Asia are working on a next-generation iPad Mini that will have a high-resolution retina display from Samsung? ?

OK, sounds like it matches the headline, right? Well, maybe not. Look at this quote:

?The report cites sources as saying that the next-generation iPad Mini will be rolled out in the fourth quarter this year, with the same size as the current 7.9-inch model.?

Note the ?next generation iPad Mini.? Doesn?t say retina.

Now let?s look at the CNET article, which seems to quote the same sources, but slightly differently:

First quote:

?Apple is going to build an iPad mini with a retina display before the end of the year, according to fresh rumours concerning the company?s tiny tablet.?

That matches The Next Web?s article so far. But look at this quote:

?9to5Mac writes that Apple is testing an iPad mini without a retina display that features a more powerful A6 processor, so it could be that we have to endure one more mini that has a low pixel count before the high-resolution version is revealed.?

That actually does match The Next Web?s article, if you interpret ?next generation? as the one Apple is supposedly testing. So, it sounds to me like we?ll see one more non-Retina mini, followed mid-year 2014 by the Retina mini, which will start production later this year (maybe even really late in the year).

Seriously, rumor interpretation can be a full time job. Anyone else have better tea leaves?

Want to Watch a Muslim Congressman Strum a Celebratory Tune for First Day of Legal Gay Marriage in His State?

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) posted a video to his YouTube account Thursday that celebrates, in guitar-strumming song no less, the first day of legal gay marriage in his home state.

The video is gaining attention not only because of its melodic merits, but also because Ellison is Muslim, and Islam is traditionally opposed to same-sex relationships.

(Credit: YouTube)

"Tomorrow, marry who you want, marry who you love," Ellison exults after a few bars of "This Land Is Your Land" accompanying himself on an acoustic guitar.

"It's all going on tomorrow because people got involved, people got active, because people did not sit back and wait for something to happen nor did they cry about bad things that were happening."

"You go do it, you go be happy, you go live your life for liberty and justice for all," he adds.

The world's three major religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) traditionally stand against homosexual behavior. Still, there are other streams of Islam that go against that tide.

iPad 5 casing leaks showing new dimensions. iPad Mini 2 may have Retina Display this year after all

Apple?s upcoming full-size iPad (let?s call it iPad 5, although Apple may not) has long been rumored to sport a redesign compared to its predecessors. We?ve been hearing that it will look a lot like the iPad Mini, with a pair of narrow bezels (the long ones), and a pair of ?normal-size? bezels (the shorter ones). And now all of these allegations have been apparently confirmed. That is because what you can see below is the back casing for the iPad 5, according to Fanatic Fone.

The pictures themselves don?t tell the whole story though. The tablet?s dimensions have been leaked alongside them. The iPad 5 will measure 24?16.8 cm. That makes it almost as tall as the iPad 4 (which stands at 24.1 cm), but a lot narrower. The iPad 4 is 18.5 cm wide. The 1.7 cm difference will surely be felt, both in terms of handling the new device, but also when it comes to how it will look.

Also new is the fact that the volume keys are now two separate buttons, and there are stereo speakers on either side of the Lightning port, just like in the case of the iPad Mini. Finally, the Apple logo is now silver, not black.

Obviously though, this could all be a well orchestrated hoax. These have happened before in the Apple leak world, so keep that in mind while you digest this information.

Yesterday we told you that Apple is testing some Retina-less next-gen iPad Mini models. This could indicate that this year?s iPad Mini refresh will stick with the 1,024?768 resolution currently employed by the company?s smaller tablet. Past rumors have been contradictory, though. Some have said that issues with production of the 7.9-inch 2,048?1,536 display panel for a Retina iPad Mini have pushed the release of that model into 2014, while an otherwise enhanced version could come this year. On the other hand, some other sources here and there have been saying that the iPad Mini 2 with Retina Display is on track for launch in 2013.

Which is it going to be, then? Well, we can?t be sure just yet. But today the WSJ chipped in, and it does look like the next iPad Mini will have a Retina Display in fact, and will arrive this year.

Of course this comes from anonymous sources, and the key word here is ?likely?. Apple?s next small tablet is ?likely? to feature a high-res screen from Samsung.?Apple is also apparently looking into making the next iPad Mini as colorful as possible, something that would echo the situation that?s been oft described for the iPhone 5C.

The displays for the new iPad Mini will be made by LG and Sharp, aside from Samsung. Initially, Apple wanted nothing to do with Samsung, but it had to add the Korean competitor as a supplier to ensure that it won?t have problems sourcing enough panels. This continues the funny story that?s been going on for a couple of years now, in which Apple is trying to fully get rid of Samsung as a supplier of various parts for its mobile wares, but is failing. Apple?s dependence on Samsung is lower now than it was two years ago, but the Cupertino company would still face problems if it gave up on Samsung completely. All this while the two companies are engaged in many lawsuits across the world on patent issues. Yes, things are definitely complicated here.
