Colorado cycling coach who admitted to past doping fired from college

Rick Crawford (Provided by Colorado Mesa University)

GRAND JUNCTION???Colorado Mesa University has fired its high-profile, winning cycling coach Rick Crawford after a third athlete who had studied under Crawford has accused Crawford of helping him to dope. Crawford denies the allegation.

In October, Crawford voluntarily had gone to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and admitted that he had helped procure performance-enhancing drugs for two professional cyclists ? Levi Leipheimer and Kirk O'Bee ? between 1999 and 2001. The agency reprimanded him earlier this month, and he agreed to perform 500 hours of community service.

CMU allowed him to stay on as coach under the oversight of former professional cyclist Scott Mercier of Grand Junction. Mercier walked away from elite professional cycling in the 1990s rather than bow to the pressure to take drugs.

"I wanted to get it out. It felt ugly the whole time," Crawford said after admitting his part in the doping scandal that has taken down many professional cyclists.

Crawford was the first coach to come forward and publicly admit to helping athletes dope. He said he never helped collegiate athletes use drugs and, on the contrary, preached adamantly against doping.

Crawford, 53, came to CMU in February after coaching at Fort Lewis College for eight seasons. His CMU team was recently ranked first nationally among Division II schools.

Crawford did not return requests for comment this week. Mercier said CMU has started a coach search. In the interim, a team member from Germany, Patric Rostel, has assumed the duties and pay of coach.

Quickoffice For iPad Now Available For Free, But With A Small Catch; iPhone And Android Iterations On The Horizon

Advertisements

If you cast your minds back to the month of June, you may remember the news of Google?s decision to acquire the powerful mobile productivity suite Quickoffice for an undisclosed fee. All told, things have been pretty quiet since then, but today, Google has made Quickoffice for iPad free to Apps for Business customers. In addition, the search giant also stated that free Android and iPhone versions would be coming soon, which although promising, all but wipes out any possibility of Quickoffice hitting the comparatively less-used BlackBerry and Windows Phone platforms.

While there are plenty of office-based apps for mobile devices, Quickoffice?s powers have always been its abilities to edit documents on-the-fly. The app lets you open up any office files you have lurking on Google Drive, right from the comfort of your iPad, and make the edits you need when you cannot be at the desk.

Ultimately, Google wants it to be easier for mobile users to convert Office files to Google documents from their devices, and even to edit without converting, and that process begins with the free iPad iteration, which is linked to at the foot of this post. Google plans to, in its own words, add ?more document conversion and mobile editing improvements? at some point next year, and by offering them as free, the company will be able to secure a strong user base in 2013.

Back when Google first took the reigns of Quickoffice, there was support for Nokia?s Symbian OS, but given how the Finnish company has now all-but ditched that operating system in favor of Windows Phone, it?s not surprising to see Google apparently phasing it out.

With Microsoft said to be preparing to bring its popular Office suite to a hatful of mobile devices in the not-so-distant future, things are shaping up to be competitive indeed in this field. There has been a distinct lack of decent productivity apps on all platforms since the smartphone boom, but thanks to none other than Google and Microsoft, things are now looking promising.

A Peek at the New Corvette's Interior

Although the official reveal is still a month away, we know a fair bit about Chevrolet's next-generation Corvette, the C7. We know what's under the hood, we have a rough idea of how it drives, and with some fairly simple search terms, you can find out what it looks like.

And now we know what the interior will be like. Well, sort of.

Yesterday Chevy released yet another teaser via YouTube, entitled "Craft." Interspersed between slow motion shots of sewing machines menacingly stitching together pieces of leather is Ryan Vaughan, Chevrolet's performance car interior design manager, uttering maxims about the value of a well-designed interior.

While it's not clear what exactly will be inside the cabin of the C7?apart from black leather, obviously?it's safe to assume that Chevy won't be skimping on the finer details when it comes to creature comforts. That might raise the alarm to some Corvette enthusiasts?Chevy has always put luxury behind performance and price to maintain the 'Vette's status as the working man's supercar. Slow-motion stitching aside, don't expect that to change.

Sony Wonderbook: Book of Spells Move Bundle (PS3)

If you have a young Harry Potter fan and a Sony Playstation 3 in your home, then the Sony Wonderbook: Book of Spells Move Bundle may just be the thing to make keep your young wizard in training happy. The Book of Spells single-player game utilizes the Sony Move motion controller, and the new Wonderbook game accessory to mimic the wand play and teach the user the different incantations and wand movements written about in the Harry Potter book series. It's an entertaining game, one that makes the most of augmented reality gameplay.

A Potter in Training
The premise of the game is the user, a young wizard, comes upon the Book of Spells in the Hogwarts Library. The book has 20 spells that the user must learn (involving both wand and incantation), and then user in different scenarios.

There are two ways to buy the Book of Spells. There's the Move Bundle ($79.99 list), which includes the game, the Sony Playstation Eye camera, the Move, and the Wonderbook. If you already have the Move and Eye camera, then you can purchase the game and Wonderbook accessory for $39.99 (list).

The Wonderbook measures 9.25 by 11 by 0.5 inches (HWD) when closed. Its pages are fashioned out of cardboard, and each page, including the cover, has a design that resembles QR codes. There are 12 pages in all.

To set up the game, you plug the Eye camera into your PS3 via the USB port. Then you activate the Move and insert the disc into your console. The game will walk you through the rest of the setup, including making sure that the user is correctly positioned in front of the Eye camera. You can also connect the game to a Pottermore account, if you have one, at this point.

Abra, Abra, Cadabra
After setup is done, the screen shows the user sitting in the restricted portion of the Hogwarts library, where the Book of Spells is kept. It's basically a shot of the user and their real surroundings with an overlay of the Hogwarts library room. The Wonderbook appears as the Book of Spells, and the Move appears as the wizard wand of your choice (you have three to choose from). The user can choose which of the four Hogwarts Houses to belong to. There is a narrator that walks the user through each of the 20 spells in the book, explaining what each one does and the story behind it. He then instructs the user on how to move their "wand" and what incantations to utter. Once the game determines that you've sufficiently learned the spell (via the video and audio recognition capabilities of the Eye camera), you then move on to challenges in which you have to use the spells. As the game goes on, and the user learns more spells, the challenges become more complex.

Now, some of the more sophisticated gamers out there may not be impressed by the simple features of the game. My eight-year-old wouldn't be one of them. It was easy for him to set up the game by himself, and once it started, he was simply enthralled. Practicing the wand motions and the incantations was a serious undertaking for him (and slightly disconcerting for his father, who thought he was trying to learn Latin). The game was very good at detecting how well the user mimicked the wand movement and said the incantation for each spells, and would ask the user to repeat the actions if it wasn't quite "right."

Book of Wonders
One nit for me is the fact that there are no other Wonderbook-based games available, and no word from Sony as to whether or not there will be. But given that the accessory is bundled into the Book of Spells game for the same price you'd essentially pay for similar PS3 games, I can't really complain. Overall, this is a pretty good deal for those who already have the Move controller and Eye camera. For those who don't, the $80 for the bundle might be a bit pricey. But if you have a Harry Potter fan at home, then the expense may just be worth it.

1 Simple Every-Business Rule for Determining Your Online ...

Get MORE Facebook Fans & Likes

One of the most difficult business aspects of online marketing is determining cost effectiveness. For two tiny little words, you actually need quite a lot of information to do this properly ? you?ll need to know exactly what your online advertising spend is, and you?ll need to know how much it is returning you. Today we are looking at simple methods that every business can use to determine their online advertising spend, and either estimate their return in advance, or track return retrospectively.

Calculating online advertising spend

Most companies have sophisticated, detailed cost-tracking systems in place to account for expenses and analyze what money is going out. If you have access to this information, this is the preferred and most comprehensive way to get an idea of your online advertising costs, as it will include employee hours, incidentals, etc.

To estimate your online advertising spend in terms of PPC ads, though, there is a simple trick you can use with Google AdWords.

* In the AdWords Keyword Tool, select ?Display estimated cost per click?.
* Select ?exact match? from the drop down menu to get a precise estimate of traffic levels.
* Multiply the search volume by ten percent to get your estimated number of clicks
* Multiply this number by the estimated cost per click to get a reasonable idea of your PPC online advertising spend

Calculating online advertising return

You can use the same information from Google AdWords Keyword Tool to estimate how much cash placing a top-spot bid for a certain keyword will return the company. You?ll need to know previous traffic statistics and conversion rates. Look at the past six months if figures, and get an average of how many people ?converted? on your site, compared to how many visited. You should have an idea of the value of a conversion to the company, so simply:

* Multiply your estimated number of clicks from step one, by your conversion rate (which can be obtained by dividing the number of conversions by overall traffic figures). This tells you around how many conversions you can expect from a top-spot ranking on Google?s paid listings.
* Multiply this number by the average value of conversion to your company, and you have an estimated return on your online advertising investment!
