Obama Gains Frosty Reputation In Washington

nytimes.com:

Mr. Obama, in general, does not go out of his way to play the glad-handing, ego-stroking presidential role. While he does sometimes offer a ride on Air Force One to a senator or member of Congress, more often than not, he keeps Congress and official Washington at arm's length, spending his down time with a small -- and shrinking -- inner circle of aides and old friends.

U.S. mulling Yemen's Saleh travel request: official (Reuters)

HONOLULU (Reuters) ? The U.S. government would only allow Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to travel to the United States for "legitimate" medical treatment, and is now considering the request, a senior Obama administration official said on Monday.

The official said Saleh's office recently contacted the U.S. embassy in Sanaa to say the president plans to leave Yemen soon and wants to get specialized care in the United States related to injuries he sustained in a June assassination attempt that forced him into hospital in Saudi Arabia.

"The request for approval for President Saleh to travel to the United States is currently under consideration. The only reason that travel to the United States by President Saleh would be approved would be for legitimate medical treatment," the official said.

On Saturday, just hours after his forces killed nine people who had demanded he be tried for the killings of demonstrators over the past year, Saleh said he would leave for the United States and give way to a successor. He did not say when he would depart.

The Yemeni leader said he would undergo some medical tests but characterized his intended trip as one of temporary exile.

"I will go to the United States. Not for treatment, because I'm fine, but to get away from attention, cameras, and allow the unity government to prepare properly for elections," he said.

"I'll be there for several days, but I'll return because I won't leave my people and comrades who have been steadfast for 11 months," Saleh said.

Increasing bloodshed and political uncertainty in Yemen is a major concern to its neighbor Saudi Arabia and Saleh's former supporters in Washington, who worry the country's al Qaeda wing could gain control of key oil shipping routes in the chaos.

President Barack Obama's top counter-terrorism official John Brennan called Yemen's acting leader on Sunday to emphasize the need for Yemeni forces "to show maximum restraint" when dealing with demonstrations, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement issued in Hawaii where Obama is vacationing.

In his phone conversation with Yemeni Vice President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, Brennan also called for all sides in Yemen's political transition to avoid "provocative acts that could spur further violence."

Hadi told Brennan he has launched an investigation into the deaths and injuries that occurred and said he would do his utmost to prevent further bloodshed, Earnest said, adding both officials agreed it was important to stick to the transition path leading to the February 21, 2012, presidential election.

"Mr. Brennan told Vice President Hadi that the United States remains a strong and fervent supporter of the Yemeni people in their quest to realize their richly deserved aspirations for security, political stability, representative government, and economic prosperity," Earnest said.

Hadi on Sunday urged Saleh's foes and loyalists to commit to a truce.

Aldar Properties gets $4.6 billion from Abu Dhabi

(AP) ? Abu Dhabi's cash-strapped Aldar Properties agreed Wednesday to accept an additional $4.6 billion from the emirate's government in exchange for real estate and services, marking its second state rescue this year.

Aldar, which is partly owned by the government, said the 16.8 billion dirhams in fresh funds will help shore up its balance sheet following a wide-ranging review of the company's business model and finances.

"The transactions we are announcing today ... are designed to create the solid financial foundation needed to drive returns to shareholders. Moreover, we have realigned our organizational structure, reduced headcount and refined our business strategy," Chairman Ali Eid al-Mehairi said in a statement.

Under the terms of the deal, Aldar is handing over 760 villas at its Al Raha Beach development in Abu Dhabi, the oil-rich capital of the United Arab Emirates. That part of the transaction is valued at 3.5 billion dirhams ($954 million).

Abu Dhabi's government will also settle a 5 billion dirham loan Aldar owes related to infrastructure at the waterfront site.

In addition, Aldar is selling for 5.7 billion dirhams an area being redeveloped in downtown Abu Dhabi known as Central Market. The government will pay the property company an additional 2.6 billion dirhams for Aldar to manage the completion of the project and handle the site's day-to-day operations.

Aldar said it expects to receive proceeds from the sales over the next four years, with 4.5 billion dirhams expected to arrive in the next two months.

Aldar's finances have been hurt by an ongoing property slump in the United Arab Emirates, the Arab world's second largest economy, which also includes the Mideast commercial hub of Dubai.

In January, it agreed to sell bonds and real estate holdings to the government to raise $5.2 billion of critically needed cash. At the time, it also took a $2.9 billion impairment charge to write down the value of its assets.

Aldar was set up in 2004 to accelerate real estate growth in Abu Dhabi. It spearheaded development of large-scale residential projects and its signature development of Yas Island, home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix auto race.

Like state-linked property companies in neighboring Dubai, it borrowed heavily to fund its growth and fell on hard times when the global economy faltered.

Mexican army: Ally's arrest is blow to 'El Chapo' (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexican authorities said Monday that they had dealt a blow to the country's most powerful drug cartel with the capture of a top lieutenant ? but didn't say if they were any closer to capturing the gang's elusive leader.

Felipe Cabrera Sarabia, known as "The Engineer," allegedly ran operations for the Sinaloa drug cartel, Mexico's most powerful, in the northern state of Durango and in part of the northern state of Chihuahua, Chief Army spokesman Gen. Ricardo Trevilla told a news conference. Cabrera, wearing a bulletproof vest, was paraded before the news media in what has become a common practice for law enforcement authorities following major arrests.

Many experts and law-enforcement officials believe the reputed leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, has been hiding in the mountains of Durango. Authorities say Guzman is Mexico's top drug lord, while Forbes magazine has included him on its list of the world's richest men, reportedly worth more than $1 billion. He has eluded authorities since his 2001 escape from prison in a laundry truck, and has a $7 million bounty on his head.

Trevilla offered no information about the hunt for Guzman. He only said that Cabrera's capture "will affect the structure and leadership of the Sinaloa cartel."

At the time of Cabrera's arrest, army special forces also seized documents and computer equipment, he said.

Cabrera was nabbed without a shot being fired Friday in the capital of Sinaloa state, headquarters of the cartel, army officials first announced Sunday night.

He will be held for at least 40 days on suspicion of participating in organized crime and drug trafficking. Mexican law allows organized-crime suspects to be held that long before prosecutors bring formal charges before a judge.

Trevilla said Cabrera and three of his brothers began as marijuana growers and that Cabrera rose through the Sinaloa ranks by using violence against his rivals.

In recent months, Cabrera waged war against a rival faction of the Sinaloa cartel known as the "Ms", leading to a surge in violence around Durango, he said.

Federal forces have found 14 mass graves containing 287 bodies in Durango state since April.

Separately, Mexican authorities said they had seized 21 metric tons of precursor chemicals used to make methamphetamine from a boat that stopped in the port of Manzanillo on the way from Peru to Guatemala.

It was the fourth large seizure this month of precursor chemicals headed for Guatemala.

It brings to more than 555 tons the amount of meth chemicals detected at Mexican ports in less than a month.

Authorities announced on Dec. 19 that they had found almost 100 metric tons of methylamine at the port of Lazaro Cardenas, and earlier said that 205 tons of the chemical had been found there over several days in early December. Mexico said Friday that it seized 229 metric tons of precursor chemicals at the port.

Experts familiar with meth production call it a huge amount of raw material, noting that under some production methods, precursor chemicals can yield about half their weight in uncut meth.

iMAME pulled from the Apple App Store

Saturday, December 24th 2011. Posted in Gadget by TechOST

iMAMEIt only took a couple of days, but it looks like the iMAME app which allowed gamers to play classic games on their iOS devices has finally been pulled out from the Apple App Store. Can?t say we didn?t see this coming, since Apple forbids apps on its store from running emulated code. However, it?s safe to say that this isn?t going to be the last we?ve seen of the app. Various emulator apps have managed to pop up on the App Store in the past (and were consequently thrown out after a enjoying a short while of success) and you can be sure that more variations will surface in the future. So for those of you that missed out on iMAME this time around, keep your eyes peeled for another emulator in the future.

How would you change Logitech's Harmony Link?

Remote controls suck, but touchscreen phones and tablets aren't smart enough to replace them, yet. Logitech's Harmony Link is there to bridge the gap between your WiFi device and TV, but we found it inflexible, unreliable and unspectacular. Some of those issues might have been fixed in the recent update -- but what would you do differently to make it the must have gadget of 2012? Ladies and gentlemen, when you've finished your turkey dinners (happy holidays!), sound off in the comments.

Robert Champion: Drum Major for Change in University Hazing

Robert and Pam Champion are to be commended for turning their pain into a force for change

Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist

Most parents of college students look forward to December, when their students come home for the holidays.? Some are so excited to see their offspring home that they actually come to their colleges to pick them up.? Others prepare special treats and goodies as an antidote to the oft complained about cafeteria food.

Robert and Pam Champion won?t have that opportunity.?? Their son, Robert, died on November 19.? His death has been ruled a homicide and he is allegedly the victim of hazing.? Florida A&M University, one of our nation?s most respected HBCUs, is in the headlines now, not because of its excellent academic programs, but because its celebrated marching band has apparently had a culture of hazing.

Robert and Pam Champion are to be commended for turning their pain into a force for change.? In a recent media interview, they indicated that they have set up a Facebook page in honor of their son, who they describe as a ?drum major for change? because they will use his story to help other victims of hazing.? Mrs. Champion also indicated that she would set up an anti-hazing hot line so that young people can, anonymously, deal with issues of hazing.? The younger Robert Champion has apparently not been the only victim of hazing in the FAMU Marching Band.? In the past, one student has had her hip broken, and two have been hospitalized with kidney damage.? And these are only the cases we know about.

The FAMU Marching Band isn?t the only organization that hazes.? Sororities and fraternities, whether part of the African American Divine Nine, or part of the larger Greek-letter organization atmosphere, seem to think hazing is part of the culture.? Whether it is yelling and screaming at pledges, to the use of actual physical violence, hazing is prevalent.? The National Study of Student Hazing, which got results from more than 11,000 students at 53 colleges indicated that "8 percent of women in Greek life have experienced hazing?.? This study didn?t focus on HBCUs, but it would not be surprising to learn that our numbers mirror these.? Two questions ? why is membership in a group so important that you?d risk your life; and why must people verbally and physically abuse those who want to join their group.

Our young people are no better than what we show them they can be.? I have heard sorority women make the distinction between ?pledging hard? and ?pledging soft?, with the implication that the brutal former is better.? Young men and some not so young men, sport brands, some of which have been infected, as symbols of their fraternity and their ?manhood?.? Many of those branded were either willing or subject to coercion.? When elders show their sons these brands, they may well co-sign the continuation of a brutal trend.

What is hazing about??? It?s bullying, it?s coercion, and it?s descent into groupthink in the worst way.? I?ve got something you want, and I?m going to make you suffer to get it.? In order to join a band you ought to be able to play music, not survive a beating.? How does the beating make you a better band member?? Actually, it allows some folks to play a game of false superiority to the detriment of others.

The bottom line, though, is that it has to stop.? The college experience should not be a brutal experience, or an experience where coercion and intimidation are ingrained into the process of joining a group.? To be sure, there are bonding opportunities in ritual ? in learning songs, history, steps, or chants.? And there may be penalties when band members or pledges don?t toe the mark in learning things on time.? But the penalties should not be physical abuse, and that abuse has become too acceptable.

What do we do about it?? Some parents whose children have been hazed have brought criminal charges or civil lawsuits.? Others have pushed for systemic change.? Leaders in higher education must assert zero tolerance for hazing and enforce zero tolerance policies with appropriate actions.? Four members of the FAMU band have been dismissed from school, but only after young Robert Champion?s death.? Had they been expelled sooner, might Champion still be among us?

Robert and Pam Champion are to be commended for turning their pain into change.? But if hazing cannot be stopped, those organizations that allow it simply need to be disbanded.

CREMONA, Italy (AP) -Former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni has reportedly admitted helping to fix Serie B matches involving his team last season. He said he agreed to go along with the scam because his team was not supposed to lose.

Doni was among 16 people arrested across Italy on Monday in an ongoing investigation into match-fixing and illegal betting on games.

After five days of solitary confinement, Doni was permitted to meet with his lawyer Friday and was then questioned by prosecutors.

"Yes, I knew about the fix for Atalanta-Piacenza. I gave my approval and I bet," Doni is quoted as saying by Saturday's Gazzetta dello Sport. "I also tried to do the same thing for the match with Ascoli. But they were all personal initiatives, I'm not part of any organization. ... The club didn't know anything."

Atalanta beat Piacenza 3-0, while the Ascoli vs. Atalanta match finished 1-1. Details have not yet emerged as to precisely what Doni did in the fixed games.

In June, 16 people were arrested as part of the first wave of the inquiry, and Doni was then placed under investigation.

Doni said at the time that he was innocent but in August he was banned from football for 3 1/2 years by the Italian football federation's disciplinary committee, and Atalanta - which was promoted to Serie A for this season - was given a six-point penalty.

"I said yes to the fixes because Atalanta benefited," Doni said, according to the Gazzetta. "I would have never listened to anyone who offered me money to make my squad lose. I made a mistake and now I can't even look at myself in the mirror because it makes me think about all the pain I've caused my family and the fans.

"The relegation to Serie B hurt me and that's why I accepted these offers," Doni added. "By winning we were sure to be promoted."

The latest arrests come five years after another major match-fixing scandal - restricted to club and referee officials but not players - resulted in Juventus getting relegated to Serie B for a season, plus point penalties for Lazio, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Reggina in Serie A.

The prosecutors in Cremona, who are leading the current investigation, have detailed an extensive match-fixing ring stretching as far as Singapore and South America and that has allegedly been in operation for more than 10 years.

Three Serie A matches from last season are also under investigation: Brescia vs. Bari, Brescia vs. Lecce and Napoli vs. Sampdoria.

A phone call was reportedly intercepted between Doni and Ravenna goalkeeping coach Nicola Santoni - who was also arrested - in which the pair discuss tampering with Santoni's iPhone, which had been confiscated by police in June.

Doni was arrested on suspicion of attempting to destroy evidence. He was due to be released from prison Saturday, but will remain under house arrest.

Others arrested Monday include former Inter Milan and Roma player Luigi Sartor, former Serie B player Alessandro Zamperini and active players Carlo Gervasoni of Piacenza and Filippo Carobbio of Spezia.

BBC moves towards HTML5 for websites, tells Flash it'll still be friends

Even the British occasionally have to change with the times. Following a study stating that 80 percent of all web video is now compatible with HTML5, the BBC has formally adopted the standard for videos on the desktop and mobile versions of its website. The full roll-out across BBC.com follows a pilot program in which the broadcaster tested HTML5 on the Health section of the site. According to Electronista, the BBC has been working with HTML5 delivery systems throughout 2011 to build its iPlayer apps for the iOS. In other news, the BBC has just texted Flash and said it's totally open to staying friends and meeting up for coffee sometime.

Finland ?finds Patriot missiles? on China-bound ship

Home - by BigFurHat - December 22, 2011 - 19:30 America/New_York - 13 Comments

The Thor Liberty is docked in Kotka

The Finnish authorities have impounded an Isle of Man-flagged ship bound for China with undeclared missiles and explosives, officials say.

Police are questioning the crew of the MS Thor Liberty after what were described as 69 Patriot anti-missile missiles were found aboard.

Interior Minister Paivi Rasanen said the missiles were marked ?fireworks?.

The MS Thor Liberty had docked in the Finnish port of Kotka after leaving Germany last week.

Dock workers became suspicious after finding explosives poorly stored on open pallets, and the missiles were then found in containers marked ?fireworks?.

The managing director of the ship?s owner, Thorco Shipping, expressed surprise. Thomas Mikkelsen told AFP news agency from Denmark that he was unaware of the matter.

Another company official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the ship had been detained in Finland and said the missiles could have been loaded on to the vessel by mistake, AFP adds.

Police did not confirm Finnish media reports that the ship had also been scheduled to stop in South Korea, Reuters news agency reports.

?Quite unusual?

Iraq: Explosions Rock Baghdad, Killing At Least 18 And Injuring Dozens

BAGHDAD ? The spokesman for the Iraqi health ministry says that at least 49 people have been killed in a wave of violence across the city.

Ziad Tariq says at least 167 people were also wounded in the attacks that struck Baghdad on Thursday morning.

The wave of attacks is the worst to hit Baghdad in months. It targeted neighborhoods around the city in an apparently coordinated campaign of violence designed to wreak havoc.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A series of blasts Thursday morning in Baghdad killed at least 23 people and injured dozens more in a coordinated attack designed to wreak havoc across the Iraqi capital.

The blasts were the worst violence to hit the country since a political crisis between Iraq's Sunni and Shiite factions erupted this weekend. The political spat, which pits Iraq's Shiite prime minister against the highest-ranking Sunni political leader, has raised fears that Iraq's sectarian wounds will be reopened.

Iraqi officials said at least 12 blasts went off early Thursday morning in nine neighborhoods around the city. The violence ranged from sticky bombs attached to cars to roadside bombs and vehicles packed with explosives.

Most of the violence appeared to hit Shiite neighborhoods although some Sunni areas were also targeted.

The worst attack was in the al-Amal neighborhood where seven people were killed in a blast that appeared to target rescuers and officials who came to the scene after a previous explosion. At least four people were killed in one western Baghdad neighborhood when two roadside bombs exploded.

All the information came from police and hospital officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

In the southwestern neighborhood of Karrada, where one of the victims was killed, sirens could be heard as ambulances rushed to the scene and a large plume of smoke rose over the explosion site.

"My baby was sleeping in her bed. Shards of glass have fallen on our heads. Her father hugged her and carried her. She is now scared in the next room," said one woman in western Baghdad who identified herself as Um Hanin. "All countries are stable. Why don't we have security and stability?"

While Baghdad and Iraq have gotten much safer over the years, explosions like Thursday's are still commonplace. They come at a precarious time in Iraq's political history, just days after American troops pulled out of Iraq.

The government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has accused the Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi of running a hit squad that targeted government officials. Al-Maliki is also pushing for a vote of no-confidence against another Sunni politician, the deputy prime minister Saleh al-Mutlaq.

Many Sunnis fear that this is part of a wider campaign to go after Sunni political figures in general and shore up Shiite control across the country at a critical time when all American troops have left Iraq.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the morning's violence. But the coordinated nature of the assault and the fact that the attacks took place in numerous neighborhoods suggested a planning capability only available to al-Qaida in Iraq.

Many of the neighborhoods were also Shiite areas which are a favorite target of al-Qaida. The Sunni extremist group often targets Shiites who they believe are not true Muslims.

Al-Qaida in Iraq is severely debilitated from its previous strength in the early years of the war, but is still able to launch coordinated and deadly assaults from time to time.

U.S. military officials have said they're worried about a resurgence of al-Qaida after the American military leaves the country. If that happens, it could lead Shiite militants to fight back and attack Sunni targets, thus sending Iraq back to the sectarian violence it experienced just a few years ago.

Gingrich fades in Iowa and nationally (Reuters)

DAVENPORT, Iowa (Reuters) ? Former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich's status as the front runner for the 2012 Republican U.S. presidential nomination is fading after weeks of attacks by rivals and intense media scrutiny of his political record and personality.

Gingrich acknowledged that negative advertisements by political opponents had dented his popularity but suggested he would refrain from launching his own attacks while responding more aggressively to criticism of his record.

"I will be back on a positive basis, I will ... tell you what I stand for and I will answer any question that comes up based on the false and inaccurate advertising of some of my friends," Gingrich told a crowd of about 250 people at a campaign event.

A Public Policy Polling survey of likely participants in the January 3 Iowa caucuses -- the first-in-the-nation Republican nominating contest -- showed the former House speaker dropping to third place from first in the Midwestern state in the span of a week. Congressman Ron Paul of Texas led the new poll, which was released on Monday.

Gingrich's lead also evaporated in national polling as Republican candidates competed for the right to face President Barack Obama, a Democrat, in the November 2012 U.S. presidential election.

"Newt Gingrich's campaign is rapidly imploding and Gingrich has now seen a big drop in his Iowa standing two weeks in a row," Public Policy Polling, which is affiliated with the Democratic Party, said in a statement.

Gingrich earned just 14 percent support in the new Iowa poll compared to 22 percent a week ago and 27 percent two weeks ago.

Paul took over the lead in Iowa with 23 percent in the new polls, an increase of 5 percentage points over the past weeks. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who has been seen as Gingrich's main national rival, was second with 20 percent.

The survey of almost 600 people, taken December 16-18, had a 4 percentage point margin of error.

Another poll, by CNN/ORC International, showed that Gingrich and Romney were tied with 28 percent of support nationally from Republicans and Republican-leaning independents.

An onslaught of television and radio commercials by Gingrich's opponents that paint him as unreliable and a Washington insider has taken a toll.

"It's tough not to feel the effects in millions of dollars in advertising spent against you with no comparable response," said Tim Albrecht, spokesman for Republican Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and a former Romney staffer during Romney's unsuccessful run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.

Gingrich acknowledged that criticisms aimed at him by rivals -- omnipresent on Iowa television and radio -- had taken a toll.

"You get enough negative ads before you start answering them, your numbers go down for a while," he told reporters after speaking to a small crowd at Global Security Services, a small business.

'WORLD IS DANGEROUS'

He nevertheless took a swipe at his rival Paul, who has opposed much of U.S. military action abroad, while discussing concerns about North Korea's nuclear capabilities.

"The world is dangerous," he said. "I really stand apart from some of our candidates in believing we need a strong defense."

Gingrich's personal favorability numbers also fell during the past two weeks among Iowa voters polled ahead of the January 3 caucuses, the polling firm said.

Gingrich's front-runner status has prompted attacks from rivals who say he is an unreliable conservative and an influence peddler, particularly because of fees he earned from Freddie Mac, a mortgage giant tied to the economic recession.

"(Gingrich) is taking an unprecedented beating. ... I have just never seen so many negative, substantively negative ads aimed at one candidate from so many different angles," said Cary Covington, a professor of political science at the University of Iowa. "Ron Paul is just eviscerating Newt Gingrich in the ads."

Iowa political operatives said there is still plenty of time for more changes in the two weeks before the caucuses.

"Newt may have peaked at the right time or peaked just a little bit too early," said Will Rogers, one of the members of Gingrich's campaign team who resigned en masse in June amid frustration over how it was being run.

Rogers, who has returned to support Gingrich as a volunteer and is heavily involved with the Republican Party, said polls represent only a snapshot in time and said it seems that many Iowa voters still remain undecided.

Rogers said Paul was benefiting from his strong organization in Iowa, unlike Gingrich who had to scramble to beef up his staff as he rose in the polls.

"You don't know where Iowans truly sit until January 3," Albrecht said. "There's an unprecedented level of uncertainty this late."

"Caucuses always surprise people at the end. One thing caucuses do is defy conventional wisdom. Someone always dramatically outperforms poll numbers and someone under performs."

Gingrich has run an unorthodox campaign, signing books at events and talking about topics ranging from the economy to brain research and lunar mining.

"His campaign has been one of speeches and ideas, not one as organized as the others. And it's been interesting to watch at public forums and speeches that people have gravitated toward him and liked what he's had to say," said John Gilliland of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry.

"But it's hard when you're trying to build infrastructure when you're behind the eight ball," he said.

New Drug Promises Vaccinations for Cancer | Amazing News

Clinical Trials for Cancer Vaccination

A cancer patient lies in a hospital bed undergoing therapy for cancer. The latest promise for cancer treatments is in the hands of a doctor that injects the patient with the latest in a new family of treatments that could revolutionize medicine. The new medication is a glycopeptides that could potentially teach the patients antibodies to attack the cancerous tumors in the body and destroy them.

The glycopeptides is the latest advancement that promises to deliver just that level of therapy for the patient and was developed by a researcher at the University of Georgia.

The glycopeptides therapy is currently in animal trials and is expected to change the way that we apply medicine in the future. Revolutionary medicine such as this is the foundation of potential vaccinations for other diseases and could potentially become the next foundation of industry, producing these new and revolutionary vaccines.

The director of the UGA Cancer Center stated that there is an emphasis on taking such discoveries and translating them into marketable products for companies. The UGA has indicated that the next steps for the treatment are to stage clinical trials of the product, but it will take several million dollars and around seven years to get from animal trials to a medicinal compound on the market.

The professor of chemistry at the UGA Complex Carbohydrate Research Center collaborated at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and helped to develop the immunotherapy treatment. The treatment, a tripartite immunotherapy, eliminated the size of the tumors in mice by over 80 percent or more. The compound has attempted for breast cancer but should be an effective treatment method for prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer and lung cancer.

The research at the University of Georgia have been made possible because of the state?s cancer research infrastructure, a medical research methodology that evolved with the creation of the Georgia Cancer Coalition in the late 1990s. Previous Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes was emphatic that the people in the State of Georgia should have the ability to receive advanced treatments at home. Several research Universities have been given the ability to do much research in the treatment of cancer. Emory University has driven much of the research and is expected to unveil a promising proton beam treatment for radiation therapy in 2015.

Emory is also managing trials on several cancer drugs. A new vaccine could not only promise help and hope for people that are suffering with cancer, but also promises the potential for jobs for individuals and the potential for increased revenue in the State of Georgia- and it today?s world, helping to conquer cancer and the economic woes of the people is good news indeed.

Gingrich spends weekend in Washington (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Just two weekends remain before the Iowa caucuses and Newt Gingrich, the Republican leading in the presidential race there, is spending this one about 1,000 miles away in Washington.

Periodic down time is not unusual for candidates who generally maintain a chaotic pace on the campaign trail.

But Gingrich is among the only candidates in a crowded and constantly evolving field to spend three full days away from voters less than 20 days before the first stop on the path to the Republican presidential nomination.

His chief rival, Mitt Romney, will spend Saturday in South Carolina ? a state Gingrich has high hopes for ? showcasing his latest high-profile endorsement, from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

By contrast, Gingrich will spend part of Saturday watching his wife, Callista, perform at a Christmas concert in northern Virginia. He also plans a morning conference call for reporters to present his criticism of the federal judiciary and how he would, as his campaign puts it, "bring federal courts back within the constraints of the U.S. Constitution."

In addition to the weekend Christmas concert, Callista Gingrich also has a book signing scheduled for Saturday in Virginia. On Sunday, Gingrich is scheduled to appear on CBS' "Face the Nation" and participate in a telephone town hall with tea party supporters.

Gingrich's campaign declined to comment on his schedule. He has struggled with the perception that he's unwilling to work as hard as some candidates to connect with voters.

Several staffers quit his campaign in June after questioning his commitment. He raised eyebrows at the time for spending two weeks on a luxury cruise through Greece and Turkey with his wife.

Gingrich's commitment to retail campaigning in early states has drawn criticism recently. He was the only candidate who didn't make time to meet with the New Hampshire conservative group, We the People PAC, which is led by leading local activist and recent Republican congressional candidate Jennifer Horn.

"I think that one of the most important parts of the primary process is candidates being willing to interact with voters," Horn said.

But strategically, time away from the media spotlight might be helpful, particularly for a candidate whose statements land him in trouble periodically.

"Although the political consultants wouldn't agree, I think you do have to pace yourself," said Rick Tyler, who was among the Gingrich staffers who resigned in June. "People get tripped up because they don't get adequate rest. And Newt's proven to the political consultants that he actually knows what he's doing."

Pastmapper looks to take Google Maps back in time

There's not exactly a ton to see there just yet, but a new website called Pastmapper has some pretty ambitious plans, and it's off to a fairly decent start. With a little help from the Google Maps API, it's aiming to provide maps of cities as they were in the past, complete with local business information, accurate streets, and even changes to things like hills and coastline. To kick things off, site founder Brad Thompson has debuted version 0.1 of the site with map of San Francisco as it was in 1853, including information from the A.W. Morgan & Company's San Francisco City Directory. Take a gander for yourself at the source link below -- and, if you're interested, Thompson is currently looking for some help to expand it.
