Plex Media Server beta adds DLNA support, streams to PS3, Xbox 360, WP7 and more

Image
Using Plex as your media server software is great, with its ability to organize and transcode media for playback on a variety of devices, but what about platforms that still lack a compatible client? The freshest beta version of Plex Media Server fixes that by supporting DLNA, making it compatible right out of the box with many of the HDTVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles and other connected devices released recently. There are some limitations when it's being used this way in terms of metadata and subtitle support, but we're pretty sure being able to access Plex at all from devices like the PS3 (as shown above), Xbox 360 and WDTV Live (the profiles it's been tested with so far) is worth it. Also featured in the beta is support for Silverlight Smooth Streaming, which comes in handy for the new Windows Phone 7 client app (Update: If you're not seeing it yet don't worry you're not alone, it's been approved by Microsoft and should be live soon, check the forum thread linked below for more information). Check out the blog post for all the details or just head to the download page to try it out yourself if you're on a Windows PC or Mac -- Linux builds are still being tested.

PayPal taps mobile chief Marcus as next CEO

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? PayPal's mobile unit chief will become the online payments service's next CEO.

David Marcus, PayPal's vice president of mobile, is succeeding Scott Thompson, who left in January to become CEO of Yahoo Inc. Marcus will move into the new job on Monday.

Marcus' leadership should help PayPal continue to expand its mobile reach. Recently, it unveiled a service that lets small businesses from coffee shops to plumbers accept credit cards using a small triangular card reader attached to a smartphone.

PayPal, which is owned by eBay Inc., has been thriving recently, becoming the fastest-growing part of eBay, which had its roots as a pioneer of online auctions. Marcus is taking PayPal's helm as the company looks to grow beyond online payments to brick-and-mortar stores and everywhere else people shop. It is currently testing a program that lets people use their PayPal accounts to pay at Home Depot stores.

Thompson, meanwhile, took on a more difficult job at Yahoo, joining the company at a time when it's struggling with revenue declines, tough competition and other problems left behind by previous CEOs who couldn't turn things around.

Marcus joined PayPal in August as part of its acquisition of Zong, a mobile payments provider that he founded.

Marcus will report to John Donahoe, president and CEO eBay.

Shares of eBay slid 33 cents to $36.91 in midday trading Thursday.

New CEO at IBM revives Augusta membership debate

(AP) ? The appointment of a new chief executive at IBM has revived the debate over Augusta National's all-male membership just one week before the Masters.

IBM hired Virginia Rometty as its CEO this year, which could mean a break in recent tradition if Augusta sticks to its history of never having a woman as one of its roughly 300 members.

The last four CEOs of IBM all belonged to the club. However, a woman has never worn an Augusta green jacket since it opened in 1933.

"I think they're both in a bind," Martha Burk said Thursday evening from Washington.

It was Burk who led an unsuccessful campaign 10 years ago for Augusta to admit a female member, demanding that four companies drop their television sponsorship because of the discrimination. Hootie Johnson, club chairman at the time, said Augusta would not be pressured to take a female member "at the point of a bayonet."

"IBM is in a bigger bind than the club," Burk said. "The club trashed their image years ago. IBM is a corporation. They ought to care about the brand, and they ought to care about what people think. And if they're not careful, they might undermine their new CEO."

Augusta National declined comment, keeping with its policy of not discussing membership.

Billy Payne, who ran the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, took over as club chairman in 2006. He said that day the home of the Masters "has no specific timetable" for admitting women. The question was raised at the 2007 and 2010 Masters, and both times, he said membership issues were private.

Rometty succeeds Sam Palmissano at IBM, which runs the Masters' website from the bottom floor of the media center. According to a list published by USA Today in 2002, the previous three CEOs also were members ? Louis Gertsner, John Akers and John Open.

Johnson wound up doing away with television sponsorship for two years to keep the Masters' corporate partners out of the fray.

Burk doesn't believe it should be that simple this time.

"What IBM needs to do is draw a line in the sand ? 'We're either going to pull our sponsorship and membership and any ancillary activities we support with the tournament, or the club is going to have to honor our CEO the way they have in the past,'" Burk said. "There's no papering over it. They just need to step up and do the right thing.

"They need to not pull that argument that they support the tournament and not the club," she said. "That does not fool anybody, and they could undermine their new CEO."

Burk said she would not be surprised if IBM pressured Rometty to say she doesn't want to be a member.

IBM has not commented.

"Really, I don't think it's her responsibility," Burk said. "It's the board of directors. They need to take action here. They don't need to put that on her. They need to say, 'This is wrong. We thought the club was on the verge of making changes several years ago, and we regretfully end our sponsorship to maintain her credibility and the company brand.' "

The debate returns just in time for one of the most anticipated Masters in years. Tiger Woods finally returned to winning last week at Bay Hill and is considered one of the favorites, along with U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. Eight of the top 20 players in the world ranking have won heading into the first major of the year, a list that includes world No. 1 Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson.

Now comes a sensitive issue that dogged the tournament a decade ago, and might not go away easily.

Augusta National does not ban women. They can play the golf course, but no woman has worn an Augusta green jacket, a status symbol in business and golf.

Rometty is said to play golf sparingly. Her greater passion is scuba diving.

The new CEO has been named to Fortune magazine's "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" for the last seven years, and was at No. 7 a year ago. She started with IBM in 1981.

"We have a face, we have a resume, we have a title and we have a credible reason to do it that doesn't involve Martha Burk," she said.

Burk said she is no longer chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations. She had planned to step down until the first flap with the Masters began in the summer of 2002. Now, she said she runs the Corporate Accountability Project for the council, a project born from her battle with Augusta.

Recreational sports in your city

If you feel like you're not as involved in your community as you'd like to be, recreational sports are a quick and fun way to simultaneously meet people and stay in shape. Many cities offer a wide variety of sports leagues through their parks and recreation departments. Popular sports include:

Dodgeball: We all remember the great times we had playing Dodgeball during recess in elementary school. Experience nostalgia when you sign up for recreational Dodgeball at your rec department. Dodgeball is a fun sport that is often played with co-ed teams. There are some players that take this game pretty seriously, so you may want to watch a few matches before you jump right into the middle of a game!

Tennis: Did you used to be a tennis star in high school or college? Recreational tennis is a great way to maintain your skills and experience some healthy competition. While you may be used to playing on nice facilities, tennis courts at an outdoor park with simply a tennis windscreen will work just as well. Oftentimes rec centers will set up matches and mini tournaments on weeknights and weekends so all you have to do is sign up. No need to find a playing partner...unless you're playing doubles, of course!

Baseball: Whether or not you can smash a baseball past the stands, situated behind the baseball netting, and out of the park, baseball is a sport that almost anyone can enjoy. The great thing about baseball is that recreationally, it doesn't take a lot of continuous running or physical activity. Sure, you have to run the bases, providing you hit the ball, but in general, rec baseball can be fun because it gives you a chance to talk with your other teammates without feeling as though you're huffing and puffing.

If you don't feel as though you're athletic, but want to be involved with some sort of team activity, try a non-contact sport such as bowling or Ping-Pong.

While many large cities already have organized recreational sports teams that are fairly easyto join, there's a chance that your city's rec department doesn't offer any organized programs. This should not prevent you from participating! Try creating your own team with some of your friends or co-workers. Perhaps once you start a team, it'll encourage others in your community to get involved. Recreation participation promotes camaraderie and a sense of community, so whatever your athletic ability and interest may be, there's a sport for you!

Humanities symposium planned to expand curriculum | Campus Times

Julia Sklar, Presentation Editor

A one million dollar endowment has been given to the College of Arts, Sciences and Engineering by UR Alumnus and Trustee Bernard T. Ferrari and his wife Linda Gaddis Ferrari for a yearly humanities symposium and related curricula.

?The symposia allows us to expand on the research and teaching that UR faculty do, enabling us to bring to campus experts in fields of interest to the broader community,? Dean for Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies Thomas Dipiero said.

Set to feature public talks from visiting scholars with a focus on the 14th to 17th century humanistic thought, the symposium hopes to bring a greater appreciation to the beauty of art, literature and history. The symposia will take place annually and will consist of several events, with the next one set to take place in the spring semester of 2013. Talks of having them span throughout a semester and possibly the entire academic year are also on the table.

The symposium will also offer half- or full-semester long courses designed to bring a ?wide variety of humanistic inquiry to a broad cross-section of the undergraduate population? Dean Dipiero said.

This semester, nine faculty members are participating in ?The Art and Science of Time,? a series of classes in conjunction with the inaugural visit of Anthony Grafton, the Henry Putnam Professor of History at Princeton University, who gave the keynote lecture entitled ?Maps of Time: Science, Scholarship, and History in Early Modern Europe? in the Carlson-Hawkins Room in Rush Rhees Library on March 21.

?He lent us his experience as the past president of the American Historical Association, and he shared his thoughts on the future of graduate education in the humanities,? Dipiero said.

?[The symposium] is a catalyst to the work we do and shows significant progress in in humanistic studies,? History Professor Richard Kaeuper said. ?Having world-renowned scholars will boost interest as well as give recognition to how important the humanities are to students and the university. To students this is a validation of their studies.?

?It?s one of the banes of being a humanities major that I have sort of accepted,? said senior and American History and literature double major Nicole St. James said. ?UR is well-known for its top-notch science programs and often times the humanities seem underrepresented.?

?People gloss over them because they aren?t as research based,? Olufemi Watson, a health and medical communications interdepartmental major, said. ?Nine times out of ten no one is giving donations to them. This was the perfect avenue to generate new enthusiasm for the humanities both within the student body and the faulty.?

Ferrari is a Rochester native and graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1970 with a bachelor?s degree in science cum laude, and a graduate from the School of Medicine and Dentistry with a medical degree in 1974. He serves the University as a trustee and a member of the Meliora Challenge Campaign Cabinet.
Ferrari and his wife are also Charter Members of the George Eastman Circle.

?The study of the humanities provides people with the ability to appreciate beauty and better appreciate life,? Farrari, who first took interest in the arts when he took a course in Medieval and Renaissance era architecture and art, said. ?The arts have relevance to solving today?s problems when that knowledge is brought together with science and other disciplines.?

He added that art helped to keep him grounded through his rigorous studies in science and medicine.

Johnson is a member of the class of 2013.

On FOX Orlando Wednesday evening, Robert Zimmerman, the father of the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, said his son was the victim. He said that Martin told George Zimmerman, "You're gonna die now, or you're gonna die tonight."

?George was going to the store, and he saw someone in his community that he did not recognize as living there,? Robert Zimmerman, a retired judge, said. ??Because there had been a lot of break-ins in the area, he thought that was suspicious that someone would not be walking on the street or the sidewalk, but they'd be walking right behind the townhomes.?

Robert Zimmerman said that his son, George Zimmerman, 28, then called a non-emergency number to report this stranger. He lost sight of the teen as he looked for an address to report to police, Robert Zimmerman told the FOX affiliate.

?It?s my understanding that at that point Trayvon Martin walked up to him, asked him, ?Do you have a ? beep ? problem?? George said ?No, I don?t have a problem?.?

The elder Zimmerman said that as his son started to reach for his cell phone, Martin, 17, punched him in the nose, knocking the larger man to the pavement. ?

For the first time, we are seeing what the shooter, George Zimmerman, looked like immediately after the killing of Trayvon Martin. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell gets analysis on the newly released surveillance video from ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman, Joy-Ann Reid, managing editor of TheGrio.com, Eugene O'Donnell, former NYPD detective and Richard Kurtz, funeral director who saw Trayvon's body.

?Trayvon Martin got on top of him and just started beating him, in the face, in his nose, hitting his head on the concrete,? Robert Zimmerman said.

That?s when Martin spotted George Zimmerman?s gun, Robert Zimmerman said.

?Trayvon Martin said something to the effect of, ?You're gonna die now,? or ?You're gonna die tonight,? something to that effect.?

When the interviewer asked about Martin?s girlfriend, who said that he told her that he was being followed, Robert Zimmerman said he didn?t believe her.

He replied: ?I don't believe she was on the phone with him, and I find it very strange with the publicity involved with this that all of the sudden, after three weeks, someone would remember that they were on the phone. I believe the FBI and others investigating this will find that that did not happen.?

Trayvon Martin was shot in the middle of a residential neighborhood, and more witnesses are coming forward to describe what they saw. A 13-year-old who saw the shooting described seeing a man screaming on the ground before the gun went off. Cheryl Brown, the mother of the eyewitness, and attorney Alisia Adamson join Politics Nation.

The family of a 13-year-old witness told Al Sharpton Thursday morning a different perspective. Although he did not witness the shooting, he heard it and said that he heard crying and that when the gun went off, the whining ceased.

Zimmerman, a self-declared neighborhood watch volunteer, fatally shot Martin on Feb. 26 in what he called an act of self-defense. Within weeks, the story started drawing nationwide attention and Sanford, Fla. Police were accused of bungling the investigation for not arresting Zimmerman. ?

Zimmerman, meantime, is in hiding. His father told FOX Orlando that he is not doing well.

Gaming Community Launches Viral Charity Stunt In Response to ...

(PRWEB) March 27, 2012

The project, called Operation ShareCraft, has only just launched and already has an army of gamers raising funds at a pace of $ 10,000 per day. With an array of stunts, videos and livestreams planned for the coming 100 days, it looks like they are well on pace to hit their donation target of $ 1 million. Already a remarkable achievement, since ShareCrafts participants are mostly students who have figured out a way to do fundraising on a level that normally requires the social and financial superpowers of Hollywood celebrities. By comparison, ShareCrafts army of gamers has raised in a single day for Save The Children what took Tony Robbins 3 weeks to raise for Kony 2012.

The trick is that ShareCraft is competitive. Gamers and participants who want to top the leaderboard can create their own personal sub-fundraiser with just a few clicks at OpShareCraft.com. The system creates a snowball-effect where donations to sub-fundraisers trigger donations to others as participants battle for higher rankings. Everyone can link to their own sub-fundraisers to involve friends, family, followers and fans. All these features are provided by Fundrazr.com, who unlocked the leaderboards specifically for ShareCraft (and will soon roll them out for everyone) when they were approached about the project by world-famous gaming and YouTube icon Chiren Boumaaza, aka Athene.

Having gamified online fundraising, ShareCraft hasnt even been announced for 24 hours yet and already has a vibrant community making videos, doing livestreams and organizing fundraisers to compete with each other on the leaderboard. If this becomes a trend, Athene says, it could change fundraising in ways similar to how Facebook and Twitter changed social networking.

Santorum looks for rebound in Louisiana

(AP) ? Rick Santorum is looking to Louisiana for a much-needed rebound as Republican voters go to the polls Saturday in the state's GOP primary.

The former Pennsylvania senator is expected to do well in the contest, just a handful of days after a decisive loss to front-runner Mitt Romney in Illinois on Tuesday.

A win over the former Massachusetts governor would serve as a reminder that Romney still struggles among the GOP's conservative faithful, especially in the South. Santorum beat Romney in primaries in Alabama and Mississippi earlier this month.

But Romney is outpacing Santorum in the race for critical delegates to the Republican National Convention, and he's been beating Santorum in big, industrial Midwestern states.

"I need your vote, and I want the vote of the people of Louisiana so we can consolidate our lead," Romney said Friday while campaigning in Shreveport. He told supporters his campaign wants to focus on "raising the money and building the team to defeat someone that needs to be out of office in 2012 and that's Barack Obama."

Republicans were voting as President Barack Obama began a trip overseas and the country was focused on the killing of unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. Obama made a personal appeal to Martin's family on Friday, and the GOP candidates all said an investigation into his death was an appropriate course to take.

Romney and Santorum were both campaigning in this northern Louisiana city on Friday, where a large oil and gas industry make energy a top issue in the primary. Both men have been highlighting that on the trail. Also in Louisiana was former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has fallen back in polls and has lost other Southern primaries to Santorum.

Santorum spent much of Friday on the defensive, explaining comments he made earlier in the week and insisting he would support the eventual GOP nominee. Still, Santorum says there are similarities between front-runner Romney and Obama that make them indistinguishable on some issues. He caused an intraparty uproar earlier in the week after suggesting he'd prefer a second term for Obama over a Romney presidency.

"Over my dead body would I vote for Barack Obama," Santorum said as he walked back his original comments less than 24 hours before Louisiana polls were set to open.

The situation underscored Santorum's challenges, particularly because he faces more difficult territory in the race ahead. He faces increasingly difficult delegate math as Romney continues to win delegates even in states where the popular vote is close.

There are 20 delegates at stake in Louisiana's primary. They are awarded proportionally to the candidates who receive more than 25 percent of the vote. So a close race would yield just a handful for any of the men in the contest.

Most states divide all the available delegates among the candidates who meet the minimum threshold. Louisiana's system is strictly proportional, with any leftover delegates designated as uncommitted, meaning they will be fought for at the state convention.

Romney has 563 delegates of the 1,144 necessary to win at the convention, according to an Associated Press tally. Santorum has 263, while Gingrich trails with 135. Texas Rep. Ron Paul has 50.

Total economic burden estimated at 39 billion EUR; Hip fractures account for more than half of all costs

Researchers at the European Congress of Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis in Bordeaux have presented new data * which shows that the economic burden of fragility fractures in the 27 member states of the European Union far exceeds previous estimates, with hip fractures accounting for around 55% of costs.

The investigators used a population based model to estimate the economic burden of fractures in 2010, using data on facture incidence, costs for pharmaceutical prevention and post-fracture health care, mortality, and population size to estimate total costs. Data for hip, vertebral, wrist, "other fractures" were included and a societal perspective was used as far as possible. Costs were divided into cost of fractures occurring within the index year, cost of prior historic fractures that still are associated with costs, and cost of pharmaceutical prevention.

The total economic burden, including pharmaceutical prevention, of fractures in the European Union in 2010 was estimated at 39 billion EUR. The highest costs were in the EU's five largest countries Germany (9.3 billion), Italy (7.2 billion), UK (5.6 billion), France (5 billion), Spain (2.9 billion).

The direct costs of treating new fractures accounted for 26 billion EUR, long-term fracture care 11 billion and pharmaceutical prevention only 2 billion. Excluding pharmaceutical prevention costs, hip, vertebral, wrist and "other fractures" comprised 55%, 5%, 1% and 38% of the economic burden respectively.

John A. Kanis, Professor Emeritus at the University of Sheffield, WHO Collaborating Centre, and lead author of the study, concluded, "We have found that pharmaceutical prevention of fractures only accounts for 2 billion EUR in expenditure approximately 5% of the total cost burden of fractures. This small investment in prevention and treatment reflects the fact that osteoporosis, which is most often the underlying cause of fragility fractures, is neither being assessed nor treated in the majority of people at high risk."

The economic burden of fractures in the European Union is expected to grow as as the number of seniors increases in Europe. Studies have estimated that the number of fractures will more than double by 2050 unless preventive action is taken.
