LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Jurors in the civil case between Michael Jackson's mother and concert giant AEG Live got another glimpse of the singer's private life on Tuesday through the eyes of a paramedic who described the singer's bedroom and the frantic efforts to revive the King of Pop on the day he died.

Many other private moments from the singer's life will be exposed as the case progresses over the next several months, with witnesses expected to testify about secret medical treatments, lavish spending and tender moments spent with his mother and children.

In the nearly four years since his death, nearly every aspect of Jackson's life has been explored in court proceedings, documentaries, books and news stories.

Still, the negligence case filed by his mother against AEG promises to deliver the most detailed account of the singer's addiction struggles, including testimony from his ex-wife Debbie Rowe about treatments involving the anesthetic propofol dating back to the 1990s.

Jackson died from a propofol overdose in 2009 while preparing for a series of comeback concerts at AEG's O2 Arena in London.

Katherine Jackson contends AEG didn't properly investigate the doctor who later administered the fatal dose. The company denies wrongdoing.

During opening statements, attorneys framed Jackson's prescription drug addiction through the prism of his superstar status.

Attorney Brian Panish, who represents Katherine Jackson, said the drug problems worsened when the pop star was under the stress of live performances.

AEG attorney Marvin S. Putnam countered that Jackson's stardom provided a cover to receive multiple, secret medical treatments, many involving propofol.

At one point in the proceedings, the harsh portrayal of Jackson's struggle with addiction, led one juror to lean forward and stare at the floor for several moments.

Katherine Jackson and two of the superstar's children, Prince and Paris, are potential witnesses whose testimony would likely focus heavily on their grieving and losses.

Panish played a song Jackson wrote for his children as a montage of photos played during opening statements. He also read a handwritten note from Jackson that his mother framed and has hanging on her wall.

"The only way you can assess damages, is to know what they had," Panish told jurors on Monday before reading the letter and playing "You Are My Life."

Katherine Jackson dabbed her eyes with a tissue. On Tuesday, she left the courtroom while the paramedic described her son's condition on the day he died.

It may be several days before jurors get another look at Jackson's softer side.

The trial will also feature testimony about Jackson's troubled finances, with debts that reached nearly $400 million by the time he died.

AEG contends the debts made him desperate to have a successful concert series.

"The private Michael Jackson was like a lot of American in the 2000s, spending a lot more than he was making," Putnam told the jury after describing the singer's lavish Neverland Ranch, his art collection and other spending.

With the start of testimony on Tuesday, the panel was transported by paramedic Richard Senneff into the singer's bedroom, a place he kept locked and where his propofol treatments were administered out of sight of everyone but Murray.

Senneff, a paramedic and firefighter for nearly 28 years, told the panel about responding to Jackson's bedroom on June 25, 2009, and finding an unusual scene.

He described a Murray's frazzled efforts to revive Jackson.

"He was pale, he was sweaty," the paramedic said of Murray. "He was very busy."

He said Jackson appeared to be terminally ill.

"To me, he looked like someone who was at the end stage of a long disease process," Senneff said, adding that Murray told him that he was treating Jackson for dehydration.

Senneff told the panel he found an IV pole, oxygen tanks and a nightstand with several medicine bottles.

Just as he previously testified in Murray's criminal trial, the paramedic told the panel that Murray never mentioned propofol, the hospital-grade anesthetic that killed the singer.

Jackson's blue hands, feet and lips, and the singer's dry eyes all signaled to Senneff that the singer was dead and hadn't been breathing for a long time.

Onlookers and paparazzi were already gathering at Jackson's gate and someone pressed a camera to the ambulance window to get pictures of the stricken star.

Toward stopping abuse of women and girls

A Christian Science perspective.

By Annu Matthai / April 29, 2013

A weak human being to be overpowered, violated, and exploited?

If I were to go only by the recent news reports here in India, I?d be inclined to believe that. But is that really what a woman is? I like to think that the majority of people wouldn?t agree.

When we think of our mothers, wives, daughters, or friends, do we associate them only with a physical form? Rather, don?t we think of their warmth, gentleness, tenderness, and even their strength? Perhaps it is their unselfishness or honesty that comes to mind. Isn?t that really what womanhood is all about ? qualities that comfort, nurture, and strengthen?

Those qualities of warmth, love, and unselfishness belong to us all, irrespective of our gender. Men express these ?feminine? qualities just as women express the ?masculine? qualities of strength and courage. Through my study of Christian Science, I?ve come to understand that it is a combination of the feminine and the masculine qualities that makes up our individuality and gives us a sense of wholeness and completeness. Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, explains it this way in ?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures?: ?Union of the masculine and feminine qualities constitutes completeness? (p. 57).

Look around you and you will see shining examples of men and women who combine these qualities perfectly. Why then have we set up these divisions, put ourselves into these little compartments of ?men must be like this? and ?women must be like that??

Much change has come to those old ways of thinking, and we are starting to break out of those compartments. Some argue that it is this breaking up that is bringing violence against women to the surface. Perhaps it is so. Perhaps it is a stirring up that is going on, bringing false ideas of both women and men to the surface so that they can be removed. False ideas that women are weak and must stay that way, or that men are strong but unable to control their bodies or their actions. It?s a wrong notion that strength can be expressed only harshly or that tenderness is equivalent to weakness. True strength is expressed gently. ?Tenderness accompanies all the might imparted by Spirit,? wrote Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, p. 514). Gentleness is not a sign of weakness.

Much more remains to be done if we are to close the gender gap that is so evident in the recent instances of violence against women in India that have horrified the country and the world. It is really a gap in the general thought that is calling to be filled with right ideas about true manhood and womanhood ? the ideal man, God?s reflection, whom the Bible refers to in its first chapter of its first book: ?God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."

This is something each of us can do because each one of us contributes to the general thought. So today, let?s claim our right ? and everyone else?s as well ? to express our wholeness, our masculinity, and our femininity. It will give a boost to the health and progress of individuals and nations as nothing else can.

How Typing on a Smart Watch Might Actually Make Sense

While the prospect of new smart watches from every corner is terribly exciting, few people seem to spent much time working out how to make them, you know, useful. But a researcher from Carnegie Mellon University has, fortunately, been trying to work out if an on-screen keyboard could work on a smart watch?and the here's his solution.

Called Zoomboard, the idea is that a small screen can contain a full QWERTY keyboard by smartly zooming as you type. Press down on part of the keyboard, and it zooms to show keys in just that area; pressing again types a letter. It also uses swipes to help you edit: swipe right to insert a space, left to delete, or up to see symbols.

It's not a complicated bit of technology, but it's neatly executed and could at least allow you to type a short message on your wrist. It better be short, though: in tests, students managed a fairly paltry 9.3 words per minute on the keyboard.

But that's OK, because this is a first step. Smart watches won't be perfect at first, but it's nice to know that people are at least thinking about how to make them work. The software will be presented at the Computer Human Interaction conference in Paris this week, and the source code will be made freely available, too. [Zoomboard via Technology Review]

U.S. government may not hit debt limit until October: analysts

By Rachelle Younglai

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States might not hit the statutory limit on its debt until October, a policy research group said on Friday, giving Republican lawmakers more time to extract spending cuts from the Obama administration in return for extending the borrowing cap.

After giving into Democratic demands in December to raise taxes and later working with them to avoid a government shutdown, Republicans have been gearing up to use the debt limit as leverage to seek fresh budget cuts and changes to the tax code.

The Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington think tank that analyzes the Treasury's daily and monthly cash flows, had expected the federal government to hit the congressionally-set limit on its debt sometime between early-August and mid-September.

But stronger-than-expected revenues and deeper-than-anticipated budget cuts mean the ceiling on borrowing probably will not be reach until sometime between mid-August and mid-October, the group said on its website on Friday.

"October is a nasty month," BPC economic policy director Steve Bell said in an interview, noting that major government payments are due in October.

If Congress does not raise the borrowing cap before the Treasury hits the limit, the government will no longer be able to borrow money to pay its bills, including interest on its bonds, raising the risk of a damaging debt default.

In an attempt to avoid being blamed for a default, Republicans in the House of Representatives are pushing legislation to require the Treasury to pay bondholders and Social Security retirement benefits before other bills if Congress does not raise the debt ceiling on time.

The BPC said its forecast could change depending on economic conditions and when updated financial information became available.

Nearly $90 billion may soon be pumped into government coffers by the now-profitable government-controlled housing finance firms Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to account for deferred tax assets that were written down.

The think tank, however, does not think the disbursement to the Treasury will be that high. "We do expect that there will be a payment of some size in June but it is our opinion that the number is more likely to be in the $20 billion range and not in the rumored $100 billion range," Bell said.

The Treasury has said it could not forecast an exact date for when Congress must raise the debt ceiling due to delayed tax filings and uncertainty about the effect of the government budget cuts.

Flurry: U.S. App Audience Now Roughly Equal To Internet Users On Laptops & Desktops

Flurry_Apps_vs_ComputersWhile the time spent in apps may be starting to challenge television, mobile analytics firm Flurry examined today what it takes to reach a TV-sized audience on mobile, comparing U.S. app usage to traditional media as well as to other online audience measurements. During “primetime,” which for apps also includes those “after-work” hours of around 7 to 10 pm, app usage among the top 250 iOS and Android applications spikes to a peak of 52 million consumers, the company found. App usage tends to drop off overnight, and weekends see higher daytime app usage through the day (9-5). During the normal workday, people use apps at least 75 percent as much as on weekends, the data shows. Of course, this is collective usage. In order to target an audience that size using traditional media, you would need to combine the audiences of the three most highly-rated primetime TV shows on a good week, says Flurry. Or you’d have to combine the circulation of the largest 200 weekend newspapers in the U.S. “We believe this comparison says a couple of important things about the app audience: first that it has reached critical mass, and second that it is still highly fragmented relative to more traditional forms of media,” notes Flurry VP Marketing Peter Farago on the company blog. The firm also noted that reaching the key 18 to 49-year-old demographic using traditional media will become increasingly difficult as they turn towards digital media more. Flurry cited a report from Morgan Stanley, which showed that there has been a 50 percent decline in TV audience ratings since 2002, illustrating this point. For what it’s worth, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings pointed to this same trend in a mission statement released yesterday, noting specifically that we’re moving towards a time when apps will replace channels. “Existing networks that fail to develop first-class apps will lose viewing and revenue,” Hastings said. It may be some time yet until that transition completes (if you even believe in this “either/or” scenario, that is). But meanwhile, when app usage is compared with the Internet audience using desktops and laptops, things are more even.?During February, for example, Flurry saw 224 million monthly actives using mobile apps in the U.S. That same month, comScore reported 221 million desktop and laptop users of the top 50 U.S. digital properties. Or in other words, though the app audience is fragmented, it’s roughly

New York Times to refine subscription model in wake of sliding ad revenue

New York Times to refine its subscription model in wake of sliding advertising revenue

If you're an avid reader of The New York Times, you're probably already familiar with its complex subscription model that ranges in price between $15 and $35 per month. Yes, it's sometimes costly to stay in the loop, but on the upside of the paywall, company CEO Mark Thompson says that readers will soon find a wider array of content packages, including less expensive options. The move may be necessary, and according to Bloomberg, the CEO painted it as "the single most important thing we're doing in the company." Today, The New York Times released its earnings for the quarter, which came in slightly below expectations and revealed a decrease in advertising revenue. Recognizing the shift, Thompson will work to make the organization less reliant on ad revenue and more focused on digital subscriptions.

As for its growth strategy, it's said that we can expect lower pricing tiers that offer access to specific content such as politics, technology and the arts, along with premium tiers that provide feature content and access to events. Curiously, videos and even games will be in the mix, but it's currently unclear where that'll fit into the tiered strategy. The New York Times currently serves 708,000 subscribers, which represents a 45 percent increase from the first quarter of 2012. It's said that we can expect the refined subscription model to arrive sometime in late 2013 or early 2014, and it'll be very interesting to see just how complex the outlet can go with its pricing.

NBCUniversal expansion to start with Harry Potter

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (AP) ? NBCUniversal plans to begin construction this summer on a $1.6 billion, 25-year expansion of its Los Angeles-area theme park, offices and production facilities.

The company owned by Comcast Corp. announced Tuesday that it would start building The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at its Universal Studios Hollywood theme park, along with upgraded TV production studios and office space on the studio lot.

The project would eventually include a hotel and retail outlets, adding nearly 2 million square feet to the studio complex. The plan initially called for nearly 3,000 residences, but that was dropped last year after objections from local residents and politicians.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors tentatively approved the plan Tuesday, unanimously directing its lawyers to prepare documents for final approval.

SKorea: We'll take 'grave measure' if NKorea rejects talks

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea on Thursday warned of an unspecified "grave measure" if North Korea rejects a call for talks on a jointly run factory park that has been closed for nearly a month.

In a televised briefing with reporters, Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Hyung-suk refused to describe what Seoul would do if Pyongyang doesn't respond by a deadline Friday to a demand for formal working-level talks on the industrial complex just over the heavily armed border in the North Korean town of Kaesong.

But Seoul may be signaling it will pull out its remaining workers from the factory across the border in Kaesong. That could lead to the end of a complex considered the last remaining symbol of inter-Korean cooperation.

As animosity rose between the Koreas early this month, North Korea barred South Koreans from crossing the border and entering the factory. It later suspended operations and withdrew the 53,000 North Korean workers who manned assembly lines there. Pyongyang hasn't forced South Koreans to leave and about 175 are still there.

The factory has operated with South Korean know-how and technology and cheap labor from North Korea since 2004. It is a hold-over from an era that saw the Koreas try to cooperate through various projects.

For several weeks, until recently, North Korea issued a steady stream of criticism and threats aimed at Seoul and Washington, expressing anger over ongoing U.S.-South Korean military drills that the North calls invasion preparations and U.N. sanctions over its February nuclear test. Pyongyang has recently eased its rhetoric, but tensions between the rivals are still high.

As Some South Korean businesses have been quietly mulling giving up on Kaesong altogether.

"Our people are suffering serious difficulties due to the shortage of food and medicines and our companies are suffering big damages and pains," Kim said.

To resolve deadlocked operations at Kaesong, Kim said North Korea should first allow some South Koreans to cross the border to hand over food and medicine to the remaining managers at Kaesong.

South Korea on Wednesday proposed talks between the head of a South Korean management office at Kaesong and the North's General Bureau for Central Guidance to the Development of the Special Zone, but the North rebuffed the offer, Kim said.

"It's very regrettable for North Korea to reject (taking) the minimum humanitarian measures for our workers at the Kaesong industrial complex," he said.

Manufacturing data stokes fears of global spring swoon

By Steven C. Johnson and Andy Bruce

NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) - Major economies in North America, Europe and Asia lost some momentum this month, business surveys showed on Tuesday, a development that may see central banks intensify efforts to revive a flagging global recovery.

China and Germany, the world's biggest exporters, both lost a step in April. Growth in Chinese factories slowed to a crawl as export demand dwindled, while the euro zone's largest economy saw business activity decline for the first time in five months.

U.S. manufacturing grew at its most sluggish pace in six months as domestic demand dried up, suggesting the world's biggest economy started to lose ground in the second quarter.

Signs were more hopeful in the U.S. housing market, where March sales were the second highest in three years. But firms and households fear that across-the-board government spending cuts were likely to slow growth further in coming months.

The U.S. data "will obviously add significantly to concerns, most recently related to the softer China and German data, that another seasonal slowdown in the global economy is taking hold," said Alan Ruskin, Deutsche Bank's head of G10 currency strategy.

More than three years after the global recession, sluggish activity in rich and poor countries has confounded policymakers who have tried mightily to kick-start growth.

The International Monetary Fund this month trimmed its global growth forecast to 3.3 percent, leaving it on par with the 3.2 percent rate recorded in 2012.

Slower global growth and falling commodity prices are likely to quash inflation fears and speculation that the Federal Reserve will start tapering its $85 billion monthly asset purchases any time soon.

The Bank of Japan, hoping to end decades of stagnation, this month began an aggressive stimulus program that will pump $1.4 trillion into its economy in less than two years.

But policymakers are also scrambling for new ideas.

Finance officials from the world's biggest economies have started to edge away from a drive to revive growth through large cuts to bloated budget deficits, an unpopular policy that European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said had reached its limits.

Governments in many the euro zone's peripheral countries with high debt burdens and slow growth, have prescribed the bitter medicine of steep budget cuts and higher taxes to shore up public finances, but that has made it harder to grow and unemployment has risen.

April data showed even Germany, among the healthiest of Europe's economies, was feeling the pinch. Financial data firm Data vendor Markit said its preliminary services PMI for Germany, measuring growth in companies ranging from hotels to banks, fell to 49.2 in April from 50.9 the previous month.

The unexpected decline added a new dimension to next week's European Central Bank meeting, which some analysts expect will deliver an interest rate cut.

"With Germany unable to offset the austerity and credit crunch drag on growth in the (weaker euro zone states), and with excess capacity growing and business expectations falling, the only question is why the European Central Bank has not cut rates already," said Lena Komileva, director of G+ Economics.

Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit, said the data may signal a renewed downturn for Germany in the second quarter.

The U.S. economy may be facing a similar loss of momentum. While the government is expected to report first-quarter gross domestic product growth of around 3.0 percent on Friday, the manufacturing slump in April suggests "the picture looks to have already began to darken again, with growth set to weaken in the second quarter," Williamson said

Williamson chalked up the decline in Markit's preliminary U.S. PMI to 52.0 from 54.6 partly to the impact of higher taxes and government belt-tightening.

The federal government began implementing across-the-board spending cuts last month, known formally as sequestration. It has meant everything from furloughs for air traffic controllers to fewer planes for the Navy to smaller subsidies for farmers.

For American companies, some sales were lost already, but the bigger concern is how much they might lose in months to come as the budget cuts begin to really take hold.

"Sequestration is a reality, but it's unfolding slowly at this time," United Technologies Chief Executive Louis Chenevert said in an interview Tuesday. "We will understand more what sequestration does as we get to the end of the year."

EXPORTS WILT

Worries about sluggish global growth were illustrated by purchasing managers indexes from Asia.

The flash HSBC Purchasing Managers' Index for China in April fell to 50.5 in April from 51.6 in March but was still stronger than February's reading of 50.4.

The figures followed an unexpected contraction in export orders in March to Taiwan, one of the region's biggest providers of technology gadgets, signaling that Asia's trade-reliant economies may be losing further momentum.

"This release was more in line with the official PMI headlines in previous months, painting a picture of a painfully slow recovery in China's manufacturing sector," said Societe Generale economist Wei Yao in Hong Kong.

The official PMI is due on May 1.

There might be better times ahead for India, whose finance minister on Tuesday said the country's worst slowdown in a decade has bottomed out.

Despite the generally weak global economic data, major stock markets rose on Tuesday, with European shares posting their biggest one-day gain in seven months as investors bet slowing economic growth would force the ECB to cut interest rates soon.

In An Uncertain Market, Two Companies To Buy Now | Stocks ...

I screened the Standard & Poor's database of 5,600 stocks to find very low-risk companies paying healthy dividends.

First, I searched for companies with little or no debt. Companies with heavy debt loads generally produce lower earnings when interest rates rise. Second, I looked for companies that pay dividends, yielding at least 1%. Lower dividend yields add less value.

Standard & Poor's lists over 2,000 companies that pay a dividend and have no debt. You can whittle the list down to just a few by requiring your choices to have Value Line financial strength ratings of A++, A+, and A, and by choosing companies with Standard & Poor's earnings and dividends rankings of A+, A, and A-.

Using these two criteria and the two parameters explained above (low debt, dividends), I came up with 20 companies that are solid candidates to buy now. After perusing the list, two companies stand out.

C.H. Robinson?(NASDAQ:CHRW) is one of the largest transportation and logistics companies in North America. Founded way back in 1905, it provides multimodal transportation services and logistics through a network of 250 offices in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

C.H. Robinson has contracts with 50,000 transportation companies, including motor carriers, railroads, air freight and ocean carriers. The company maintains the largest system of transportation capacity in North America. In addition, C.H. Robinson operates logistics services, such as fresh produce transport, freight consolidation, and cross-docking.

The company has demonstrated steady growth during the past 15 years, with 14 increases in EPS (earnings per share) and dividend increases in every year. Recent acquisitions and rising costs slowed earnings growth in 2012, which caused CHRW's stock price to decline to bargain levels.

I expect cost controls and cost savings from acquisitions to boost EPS by 19% during the next 12 months ending March 31, 2014, after rising 6% in the past 12 months. Sales will likely increase 11%, same as a year ago.

At 17.6 times my forward EPS estimate of $3.40, and with a dividend yield of 2.3%, CHRW's stock is clearly undervalued. CHRW shares will likely rise to my sell price within one to two years.

FactSet Research Systems?(NYSE:FDS) provides global economic and financial data to investment professionals. The company combines data from hundreds of sources into a single online information library, accessible from numerous devices using a private network.

The network provides a direct, high-speed data link between FactSet's mainframe computers and the client's personal computer or network. The system allows users to download, search, and analyze data in a variety of formats, including custom-designed reports.

Sales and earnings growth has continued unabated, because FactSet is taking market share from competitors such as Bloomberg, Dow Jones, Morningstar, and Thomson-Reuters. FactSet's first-class customer service and unique data sets have become a big advantage.

The recent shift from bond mutual funds to stock mutual funds could enable FDS to beat 2013 forecasts. The company derives more than 80% of revenues from the mutual fund industry.

Sales will likely increase 10% and EPS should rise 12% during the next 12-month period ending February 28, 2014. At 18.8 times my forward EPS forecast of 4.83 and with a dividend yield of 1.4%, FDS shares are a little high. The company's superior sales, earnings, and dividend growth warrants the higher valuation.

FactSet has paid dividends since 1999, and increased its dividend more than 10% every year since 1999. I expect another hefty dividend increase before mid-year. Buy FDS now.

Radioactive bacteria targets metastatic pancreatic cancer

Apr. 22, 2013 ? Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University have developed a therapy for pancreatic cancer that uses Listeria bacteria to selectively infect tumor cells and deliver radioisotopes into them. The experimental treatment dramatically decreased the number of metastases (cancers that have spread to other parts of the body) in a mouse model of highly aggressive pancreatic cancer without harming healthy tissue. The study was published today in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"We're encouraged that we've been able to achieve a 90 percent reduction in metastases in our first round of experiments," said co-senior author Claudia Gravekamp, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology & immunology at Einstein who studies new approaches to treating metastatic cancer. "With further improvements, our approach has the potential to start a new era in the treatment of metastatic pancreatic cancer."

Pancreatic cancer is among the deadliest of cancers, with a five-year survival rate of only 4 percent. The National Cancer Institute predicts that this year, 45,220 new cases of pancreatic cancer will be diagnosed and 38,460 people will die from the disease. Pancreatic cancer confined to the pancreas can be treated through surgery. But early pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect, since it rarely causes noticeable signs or symptoms. Most pancreatic cancer cases are diagnosed only after the cancer has spread (metastasized), typically resulting in jaundice, pain, weight loss and fatigue. But there is no cure for metastatic pancreatic cancer, and treatment focuses mainly on improving quality of life.

Several years ago, scientists observed that an attenuated (weakened) form of Listeria monocytogenes can infect cancer cells, but not normal cells. In a 2009 study, Dr. Gravekamp discovered the reason: The tumor microenvironment suppresses the body's immune response, allowing Listeria to survive inside the tumors. By contrast, the weakened bacteria are rapidly eliminated in normal tissues. (Listeria in its wild form causes foodborne illnesses, particularly in immunocompromised people.)

Scientists later showed that Listeria could be harnessed to carry an anti-cancer drug to tumor cells in laboratory cultures, but this concept was never tested in an animal model. These findings prompted Dr. Gravekamp to investigate Listeria-tumor interactions and how Listeria could be used to attack cancer cells.

The idea of attaching radioisotopes (commonly used in cancer therapy) to Listeria was suggested by Ekaterina Dadachova, Ph.D., professor of radiology and of microbiology & immunology at Einstein and the paper's co-senior author. Dr. Dadachova, who is also the Sylvia and Robert S. Olnick Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research, is a pioneer in developing radioimmunotherapies -- patented treatments in which radioisotopes are attached to antibodies to selectively target cells including cancer cells, microbes or cells infected with HIV. When the antibodies bind to antigens that are unique to the cells being targeted, the radioisotopes emit radiation that selectively kills the cells.

Working together, Drs. Gravekamp and Dadachova coupled a radioactive isotope called rhenium to the weakened Listeria bacteria. "We chose rhenium because it emits beta particles, which are very effective in treating cancer," said Dr. Dadachova. "Also, rhenium has a half-life of 17 hours, so it is cleared from the body relatively quickly, minimizing damage to healthy tissue."

Mice with metastatic pancreatic cancer were given intra-abdominal injections of the radioactive Listeria once a day for seven days, followed by a seven-day "rest" period and four additional daily injections of the radioactive bacteria. After 21 days, the scientists counted the number of metastases in the mice. The treatment had reduced the metastases by 90 percent compared with untreated controls. In addition, the radioactive Listeria had concentrated in metastases and to a lesser extent in primary tumors but not in healthy tissues, and the treated mice did not appear to suffer any ill effects.

The treatment may have the potential for clearing an even higher percentage of metastases. "We stopped the experiment at 21 days because that's when the control mice start dying," said Dr. Dadachova. "Our next step is to assess whether the treatment affects the animals' survival."

"At this point, we can say that we have a therapy that is very effective for reducing metastasis in mice," Dr. Gravekamp noted. "Our goal is to clear 100 percent of the metastases, because every cancer cell that stays behind can potentially form new tumors." The researchers expect the treatment could be improved by fine-tuning the treatment schedule, using higher doses of radiation, or by piggybacking additional anti-cancer agents onto the bacteria. Einstein has filed a patent application related to this research that is currently available for licensing to partners interested in further developing and commercializing this technology.

This work was supported by grants from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute on Aging (AG023096-01 and CA129470-01), both parts of the National Institutes of Health.

Scientist identifies protein molecule used to maintain adult stem cells in fruit flies

Apr. 22, 2013 ? Understanding exactly how stem cells form into specific organs and tissues is the holy grail of regenerative medicine. Now a UC Santa Barbara researcher has added to that body of knowledge by determining how stem cells produce different types of "daughter" cells in Drosophila (fruit flies). T

he findings appear today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Denise Montell, Duggan Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at UCSB, and colleagues studied the ovaries of fruit flies in order to see stem cells in their natural environment. Because these organisms are excellent models for understanding stem cell biology, researchers were able to shed light on the earliest stages of follicle cell differentiation, a previously poorly understood area of developmental biology. "It is clear that the fundamental principles that control cell behavior in simple animals are conserved and control the behavior of our cells as well," she said. "There is so much we can learn by studying simple organisms."

Using a nuclear protein expressed in follicle stem cells (FSCs), the researchers found that castor, which plays an important role in specifying which types of brain cells are produced during embryonic development, also helps maintain FSCs throughout the life of the animal. "Having identified this important protein molecule in fruit flies, we can test whether the human version of the protein is important for stem cells and their daughters as well," said Montell. "The more we know about the molecules that govern stem cell behavior, the closer we will get to controlling these cells."

Her research team placed the evolutionarily conserved castor (Cas) gene, which encodes a zinc finger protein, in a genetic circuit with two other evolutionarily conserved genes, hedgehog (Hh) and eyes absent (Eya), to determine the fates of specific cell progeny (daughters). What's more, they identified Cas as a critical, tissue-specific target of Hh signaling, which not only plays a key role in maintaining follicle stem cells but also assists in the diversification of their progeny.

The study also shows that complementary patterns of Cas and Eya reveal the gradual differentiation of polar and stalk precursor cells at the earliest stages of their development. In addition, it provides a marker for cell fates and insight into the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which FSC progeny diverge into distinct fates.

Follicle cells undergo a binary choice during early differentiation. Those that turn into specialized cells found at the poles of egg chambers go on to make two cell types: polar and stalk. The three genes, Cas, Eya and Hh, work in various combinations, sometimes repressively, to determine which types of cells are formed. Cas is required for polar and stalk cell fate specification, while Eya is a negative regulator of these cells' fate. Hh is necessary for Cas to be expressed, and Hh signaling is essential to repress Eya.

"If you just had one of these markers, it was hard to tell what's going on," explained Montell. "All the cells looked the same and you had no idea when or how the process occurred. But now we can actually see how the cells acquire different identities."

Hh also plays many roles in embryonic development, adult homeostasis, birth defects, and cancer. Hh antagonists are currently in clinical trials for the treatment of several types of cancer. However, Hh signaling is important in so many different cell types and tissues that systemic delivery of such inhibitors may cause serious side effects. Therefore identifying the essential, tissue-specific effectors of Hh has the potential to lead to the identification of more specific therapeutic targets.

Someday, targeted inhibition of Hh signaling may be effective in the treatment and prevention of many types of human cancers.

Like Ripples On A Pond, So Is Happiness - The Self Improvement Blog

ripples in waterBy Dr. Robert Henry Schwenk ?

Toss a pebble into a pond. Ripples from the pebble?s splash grow out from the splash-zone. They grow and grow until they reach the shore of the pond. Sometimes they rebound back upon themselves and intercept newer ripples created by the pebble?s impact with the water.

So it is with happiness in your life. Finding happiness is like the pebble entering the pond?s watery habitat. Happiness is absorbed into the pond and made to become part of it. The pebble descends to the bottom of the pond and sets up residency.

When you find your own happiness it sets up residence within you. That happiness becomes part of who you are. Happiness becomes an integral part of your life.

But here is the bigger picture. As the pebble impacts the surface of the water, its energy sets up waves of energy commonly known of as ripples. These ripples spread out in all directions. Obviously they stir the surface of the pond. They affect the edge of the pool as well. The energy that is carried on those tiny waves sways the reeds at the edge of the water. The edge of the pond is changed in subtle or not so subtle ways.

Of course, that energy agitates all the millions of tiny creatures that live in and among the reeds. The splashing pebble has caused the lives of those teeming millions to be affected. Maybe a tiny creature was about to eat another even tinier creature. The wave from the pebble caused the two creatures to separate by just a little more and a meal is missed.

On the other hand, maybe a meal is found and consumed because of that tiny ripple from that pebble splashing into the pond. One cannot always know the consequences of one?s actions and thoughts.

You can know, however, that when you share your happiness, the ripple effect is sure. From the joy and bliss you generate from your happiness-within, you impact the world in ways that you will know and in ways you may never know. You may believe, and rightly so, that when you share your happiness, you are doing good in the world, indeed, in the Universe.

You change lives in a positive way. When you are genuinely happy within yourself, you cannot help but raise the level of the good in your world simply by being who you are from the inside out. You ripple through the Universe.

And sometimes these ripples of happiness even come back to reinforce your way of thinking and living. Just as ripples may reach the shore of a pond and rebound back toward their source, so may your beams of happiness undulate back to you. In other words, you bring honor to your inner happiness through your own efforts.

You may not even set out to do this ? bring honor to your own happiness. It is, however, a natural result of beaming your bliss into the world. So you can accept it as something that naturally comes to you and spontaneously helps to fulfill you in your happiness. When your happiness is multiplied back to you, you have every good reason to accept it.

There you have it ? happiness is like ripples in a pond produced by a pebble being dropped into the water. The ripples change things in the world ? stir things up. Just so your happiness as it spills out from you into the Universe. Sometimes those ripples rebound and reproduce the original energy. Just so your happiness as it comes back to reinforce itself within you.

I invite you to be Happier In Five Minutes http://www.createspace.com/3724772 and for the Rest of Your Life This book will give a great start on being happy. Buy it now.

Four Traditional Mexican Folk Dances | Content for Reprint

Author: T.R. Isleland | Total views: 120 Comments: 0
Word Count: 667 Date:

Mexico is a country with a myriad of rich traditions, stemming from both the pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures and the influence of their European conquerors. Baile Folklorico, or folk dancing, is a prominent part of Mexican culture today. These dances come in so many forms that it would be a challenge to elucidate them all. So instead, below are four interesting styles of Mexican folk dancing, their histories and meanings. Enjoy!

Concheros

Known alternately as Huehuenches, Chichimecas, Aztecas and Mexicas, the Concheros dance is one of the oldest dances in Mexico--dating back to shortly after the conquest of the Aztec Empire by the invading Spanish. The Concheros dance represents a compromise between various influences--it is meant to preserve the heritage of Mexico's indigenous pre-Hispanic population, and is based on the indigenous "mitote" dance, but was adapted during the Spanish Conquest to take on a Catholic meaning. It is typically performed by dancers in exceedingly elaborate costumes that are meant to resemble the garb of the defeated Aztecs (although influences from other indigenous cultures, including some originating in the current United States, has inevitably crept in over the centuries.)

Danza de los Voladores

The Danza de los Voladores is another indigenous dance, although its specific origins remain obscure. It is thought to have originated with Nahua, Huastec and Otomi peoples of central Mexico, but the legends and traditions of the dance in its modern form are more closely associated with the Totonac people. According to Totonac myth, the ritual was first performed in response to a severe drought hundreds of years ago. In order to please the rain god Xipe Totec, the village chose five young, chaste men to cut down the largest tree in the forest, erect it in the center of the village and climb to its peak. Four of the men then proceeded to jump from the top of the trunk, while the fifth remained, dancing and playing music. The core of this basic practice remains intact in modern times, with four young men jumping from the pole (safely fastened to its peak with ropes) while the fifth dances atop it, but the more complex religious and ritual elements of the ceremony have been lost to history.

La Conquista

In stark contrast to the previous two, La Conquista is decidedly NOT a dance with any indigenous origin whatsoever. It depicts the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire and involves two groups of dancers--one that represents the indigenous Aztecs, and the other that represents the Spanish Conquistadors, each in distinctive forms of dress--feathers and "skins" for the Aztecs, arquebuses (rifles) and shining helmets for the Conquistadors. Some versions of the dance even include dancers who represent such key figures as Hernan Cortes and Emperor Montezuma, and end with either the slaying of the king or the baptism of his Aztec subjects. It's a fascinating, if a bit disturbing, legacy of the Spanish eradication of pre-Hispanic cultures and peoples.

Jarabe Tapatio

Sometimes known as the "Mexican Hat Dance", the Jarabe Tapatio is probably the most widely-known and recognizable of all the Mexican folk dances. Originating in the late 18th century, the dance is meant to illustrate the courtship ritual--the man makes advances toward the woman, who rejects them at first, but is eventually swayed and accepts the man as a partner. Because of its undeniable sexual overtones, the Jarabe Tapatio was roundly condemned by the Roman Catholic Church, and was originally only performed between two female partners. It was even banned outright by the Spanish colonial government, because it was considered immoral and perceived as a challenge to colonial authority. After the Mexican Revolution, however, it was adopted as the "national dance" of Mexico as a way of representing cultural unity for the fledgling nation. Since then, the dance has shifted its connotations away from the erotic and toward the patriotic, with the dancers adopting more traditional Mexican outfits.

UCLA's Vanessa Zamarripa back from injury, ready for NCAA finals

Vanessa Zamarripa, the Pac-12 Conference gymnast of the year, is a fifth-year senior at UCLA who has steadied the Bruins as three key team members suffered season-ending injuries.

Hers was a voice of experience based on how she dealt with her own serious injury, a torn Achilles' tendon she sustained two years ago.

"I'd be happy to give Kobe [Bryant] some tips," Zamarripa quipped Thursday before practice in advance of the 12-team NCAA championships that begin Friday at Pauley Pavilion.

UCLA, which has won six national team titles, will participate in the second of two six-team semifinals on Friday. The Bruins are grouped with Arkansas, Alabama, Michigan, Utah and Oklahoma at 6 p.m.. Earlier in the day, Illinois, Georgia, Minnesota, Louisiana State, Stanford and Florida will compete. The top three teams from each semifinal advance to the team finals on Saturday. The meet will conclude Sunday with individual event finals.

UCLA entered this season with high hopes. The Bruins had 2008 Olympic silver medal winner Samantha Peszek; former world champion team member Mattie Larson; and Christine Peng-Peng Lee, a 2012 Olympics hopeful from Canada who suffered a knee injury that kept her out of the competition at London.

But that knee injury also kept Lee sidelined this season, and she was joined by Peszek, who sustained a torn Achilles in December, and Larson, who was knocked out by a knee injury in March.

Zamarripa did all she could to keep UCLA in contention. She is ranked No. 1 nationally in the all-around and vault, No. 4 on the uneven bars, No. 7 in floor exercise and No. 22 on the balance beam.

She is also relentlessly positive. "All the injuries might have almost been a blessing in disguise," Zamarripa said. "It's forced a lot of girls who weren't going to compete to not only compete but to upgrade their routines."

Zamarripa has already won a national championship with UCLA, when she was a freshman. After that, she was invited by United States' women's coach Martha Karolyi to compete for a spot on the USA world championship team. She declined the invitation to work on upgrading her college routines, hoping to try out for the world team the following year. But then she sustained the torn Achilles.

"That changed a lot of plans I had," she said. "Instead of training for worlds I was rehabbing and learning to walk again."

The way she has performed this season, her comeback seems complete. "She is one of the most talented athletes, period, in any sport," UCLA Coach Valorie Kondos Field said. "She's got God-given talent, and she has a compassionate heart as great as her talent. She has no ego at all."

Peszek, who hopes to be back with the Bruins next year, said she has learned about being a competitor by watching Zamarripa this season.

"She gets in a dream-like zone before she competes," Peszek said. "It's so interesting. You can't teach a gymnast how to compete."

At an NCAA regional two weeks ago, Zamarripa whacked her left ankle on the balance beam and suffered a sprain. She was in a walking boot for a few days, but during training Thursday Zamarripa never winced once on a landing.

"I'm fine," she said.

If she is, so is UCLA.
