Global warming, runoff pollution from agriculture, fossil fuels, sustainability... These are just a few issues that we deal with as responsible and eco-conscious inhabitants of this planet called Earth. If you visit forums that are dedicated to discussions on the environment, there are many different views on any given topic. However, one thing is clear, we need to be responsible with the resources that we have. And we need to take care of the only habitable planet that we know of in this unfathomable universe.
Global warming, excuse the pun, is a hot topic issue. There is a lot of controversy regarding the causes, science behind measuring global warming, the impact on the earth and on humanity, and what we can do to alleviate the problem (if we can at all). The US Environmental Protection Agency believes that human activity has caused an increase in "greenhouse gases," causing the temperature of our atmosphere to increase. It believes that this increase in temperature will affect the planet's climate and surface level temperature. The EPA encourages people to make simple changes that could have a lasting impact on reducing the level of greenhouse gas emissions.
There are those who disagree that there is any sort of global warming trend happening at all. Some argue that the science behind measuring the levels of CO2 in the air is untrustworthy, and that global warming is used as way of inciting fear and to perpetrate a myth. There is much dispute as to how data was gathered, and whether global warming (or cooling) is just a natural cycle that the earth goes through.
Whatever the controversy, I have seen negative consequences arising from human activity. China is a rapidly developing country, and many Chinese people live near the factories. The rise of cancer in the Chinese population is directly correlated with the proximity to, and growth of, the factories. There are more children who are affected by an increase of lead in their blood, causing lead poisoning. Chinese waters- both underground and above ground- are becoming increasingly polluted.
Knowing that human activity can have an increasingly detrimental effect on the climate, water, earth, the land, and ultimately to ourselves and our posterity, what do we do about it? I think before we can do something, we need to think differently about what we do. We need to know that we can and do have both positive and negative impacts on our earth. Whether we try to preserve natural habitats or drive gas guzzling vehicles, we are either adding to the beauty of the earth or taking away from it.
Pitch a tent and look out at the beauty of the earth. Look at the plants that grow. See for yourself the wonder of the heavens without the glaring orange lights of the city. Then ask yourself how the little things we do can affect the earth.
This brings me to the issue of sustainability. Human life must be able to endure through the ages, through procreation, through responsible management of our resources, and by continuing to change and adapt to the needs of humankind and the earth. This is the most difficult part of being human- adjusting ourselves to create a compromise between what we need and want, and what we might consider is the greater good.
When I hike through the trails hidden in California's mountains, and look down at the beautiful landscape at my feet, I am struck by wonder of this earth. The pristine waters of Lake Tahoe, the summit of Mount Baldy, even Catalina's crowded bay- causes me to think about my role and impact on this planet we call home.
