A person who is suffering from drug dependence will psychologically and physically need a certain medication. He tends to focus his life on the substance which will disrupt his coping ability especially when he is not able to take the drug. A drug dependent associates himself with other drug abusers and he shows health and behavioral changes.
When a person who uses a medicine beyond what is prescribed by his doctor, he can become tolerant or dependent on the substance. This is because his body needs more frequent or larger doses of the substance to experience the same effect. During this period, the body has become used to the effects of the medicine. According to drugs and alcohol treatment specialists, a drug dependent will display withdrawal symptoms when he tries to stop taking the medicine that he is dependent on. These symptoms include hallucinations and confusion.
While some medications may cause physiological dependence, others cause psychological addiction. But a lot of drugs may have both properties. Medicines like morphine and heroin are physically addictive while cannabis, ecstasy and cocaine can cause psychological dependence.
Abusing medications can result in some health issues which should be dealt with by a medical professional to prevent even more damaging effects. Those who use medications in order to alleviate pain are likely to become dependent, although this is not common for those who do not have an addiction history. Many drugs and alcohol treatment professionals say that the real cause of drug dependence and abuse is unknown. But, an individual?s genes, peer pressure, a drug?s action, depression, emotional distress, environmental stress and anxiety can be factors. Treating drug abuse should begin with identifying the problem. Although denial can be a symptom of addiction, some studies claimed that addicts are far less in denial if their condition is handled with respect and sympathy than when they are told or confronted.
Treatments for drug dependence should be performed individually. Treating an addiction to certain substances may include a combination of drug therapy, counseling and self-help activities. Self-help techniques include allowing an addict to find help from sources like books and rehab centers. Drug therapy is using a controlled amount of medicines which will be decreased over time to help in minimizing withdrawal symptoms. Drug dependence counseling may involve behavioral and family therapy to help the sufferer learn to live a life that is free from drugs.
People who are using medications to manage certain disorders should use the drugs based on their prescriptions. Continued use of the drugs should be overseen by a doctor to prevent health problems.
