Wayne Gretzky

It was on this day in 1980 that Wayne Gretzky tied the NHL record for most assists in a single game, with seven.? The Great One accomplished the feat during a game against the Washington Capitals, which his Oilers won by a score of 8-2.

The only other player to record seven assists in a single game was Billy Taylor, who did so back on March 16, 1947.? Gretzky would go on to record seven assist in a single game two more times; once in 1985 during a 12-9 win over the Blackhawks, and again in 1986 during an 8-2 victory over Quebec.? It is just one of the many records that No. 99 still holds to this day.

Seven assists in a single game is not as easy as Gretzky made it seem.? With a reduction in scoring in the current NHL, it is unlikely that anyone will be breaking that record anytime soon, however, it is far from the safest record that ?The Great One? currently holds.? The safest would probably be his 50 goals in 39 games, or his 215 points in a single season.? I wouldn?t except those records to be changing hands anytime soon.

Here is a highlight video of ?The Great One? in action.
