MIDDLESEX COUNTY ? About 100 friends, family and federal, state, county and local officials met at Fords Park in the Township of Woodbridge on Saturday, June 29, to dedicate the Stephen J. ?Pete? Dalina Sports Complex. Freeholder Dalina also was presented with a ceremonial plaque commemorating the dedication and his 50 years? of public service.
The ceremony, attended by U.S. Representative Frank Pallone, State Assemblymen John Wisniewski and Craig Coughlin, the entire Middlesex County Freeholder Board, Sheriff Mildred S. Scott, Surrogate Kevin Hoagland, and the Woodbridge Township Council, took place during the Woodbridge/Clara Barton Little League Annual Picnic celebration. The event was postponed from June 8 because of inclement weather.
As a Freeholder since 1990, Dalina was the force behind the expansion of the County?s Parks system. Under his guidance the park system has grown from nine parks to 25 parks and conservation areas.
Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said: ?I am thrilled to be here today to dedicate this sports complex in the name of my friend and colleague Stephen J. ?Pete? Dalina ? a man who, for the last 50 years, has dedicated his life to serving the people of Middlesex County and of Woodbridge Township.?
?Chief among things, Pete has always been an athlete with a fierce competitive spirit. This has translated into a long-standing dedication to offering a wide range of state-of-the-art recreation facilities for residents of all ages and abilities,? Rios said.
Rios explained that at Dalina?s direction, the County developed the Level Playing Fields complex in Roosevelt Park, an award-winning, barrier-free facility makes it possible for athletes of all abilities to play and compete.
The county also built the Family Skating Rink and cricket pitches, installed artificial turf fields and incorporated modern park design and materials to better serve park-goers, during Dalina?s tenure, which will end when he retires from the Board at the end of the year.
?Every part of Middlesex County has benefitted from Freeholder Dalina?s work and dedication,? said Ralph Albanir, head of the County?s Infrastructure Management Department, Director of the Parks and Recreation Office and longtime friend and colleague of Freeholder Dalina. ?Pete is the best boss I have ever had. He has more enthusiasm and more heart than anyone I know. It is because of him, that Middlesex County can boast about its state-of-the-art and comprehensive parks and recreation offerings.?
