Health Insurance Vote | WJTV

Some Hinds County employees are upset with the Board of Supervisors over their health insurance vote.

The board voted to keep the same insurance company.? As a result, deductibles will be lower, but county employees will pay more each month.? For example, an employee who pays 73-dollars for medical coverage will now pay 87-dollars on top of that.? Some county employees are taking their frustration to the board tomorrow.

"It won't affect me either way they go," comments a Hinds County employee.

But, Sharon Sims is speaking out for those employees struggling to make ends meet.

"You?re looking at a difference for a single mother, from 263-dollars to 295-dollars," recalls Sims.

Sims is comparing the health insurance plan the supervisors chose to the one they did not.

"It may be kibbles-and-bits to some, but for others it's a full meal," expresses Sims.

She says some employees are having to make the hard decision of not buying insurance.

"Give us the benefit of the lower rate, if it's not going to have an adverse affect on the county overall," demands Sims.

But, according to Supervisor Kenneth Stokes, it will.

"The one that looked better is the one with the bridge.? We don't want a bridge or a gap.? When we had the gap, it cost the county hundreds of thousands of dollars we don't have," explains Supervisor Stokes.

Simply put, a gap or bridge is an insurance term to protect against the total amount between loss from monetary shortfall and insurance deductible.? It?s something Supervisor Stokes believes is no longer needed.

The Hinds County Board of Supervisors meeting will be tomorrow morning at 9:00 at the chancery building.? We?re told, the county administrator found additional money, and Supervisor Stokes plans to make a motion to give employees raises and to increase the county's payments for insurance premiums to help the employees.

Also, at Monday?s meeting, some concerned citizens will voice their opinions about the Fair Cloth Rubbish Landfill expansion, which is now up for a re-vote.? The landfill is located on Springridge Road near McRaven Road in Clinton.

The owner requested to expand the landfill to an adjacent field.? Supervisors followed the request of the zoning board, which last week denied a permit for the expansion.? Opponents said the expansion would have a negative impact on their neighborhood.? Supervisors could vote again to expand the landfill, and we're told, folks will again voice their opposition at tomorrow's meeting.
