Now in his 60s and with a lifetime playing bit parts in the Kiwi music industry, Bernie Griffen has pasted together two EPs from the past couple of years to produce one of the strongest Kiwi folk albums of all time.
His punkish attitude and obsession with Americana hints at Nick Cave's murder ballads while his clear eye for detail and voice of experience gives him the rare combination to take events such as the Pike River mining disaster and Occupy protests and commit them to song without seeming flippant or preaching.
Lyrically, this is an album that's been a lifetime in the making relying on honest appraisals of life with the benefit of a harsh hindsight.
This month he'll share a large stage with Emmylou Harris in Auckland, but he's usually out on the town somewhere - and he's well worth a listen live.
