Too Much Confrontation? (Confronting Friends, Part 2 ...

Confrontation with anyone, let alone our friends, can be difficult. One of the skills we hope to develop is how to speak up for ourselves and advocate for our needs with other people. This doesn?t only mean learning how to ask for what we want, but also learning how to confront others when we feel wronged or in some way upset by them.

When strengthening a previous area of personal weakness and developing a new skill, it is a common tendency to overcompensate. For example, if our previous difficulty was handling conflict or issues with confrontation, and we learn new skills to confront in a healthy manner, we may start confronting more often?than necessary, almost as if we seek opportunities for confrontation practice.

It often takes a struggle in this area before people realize that there?is?such thing as too much confrontation. It?s a good thing to be able to handle conflict in a healthy manner, but it?s not healthy or necessary to confront people every time we feel frustrated.

Even when you become the master of confrontation and handling conflict, it?s important to still choose battles wisely. Part of dealing with frustrations with other people is being able to internally sort out the issues to see what?s necessary to open up between you and the other person involved.

Why not just confront every issue with our new confrontation skills? Isn?t it important to communicate and not hold things inside?

It is important to communicate well, but it?s equally important to know when the interpersonal confrontation needs, or doesn?t need, to happen.?Part of being a good communicator is also understanding when it?s?not?necessary to confront and let something go.?

Remember, when we are annoyed or frustrated by something and we choose to raise the issue, we?re not opening the conversation only to say we are frustrated, we?re also looking for our friends to respond by adjusting their actions to accommodate this in the future. Each time we raise an issue, it?s asking for an accommodation to be made. If this is overdone, it could put stress on the relationship,?including putting the other person in the position of closing off to us and becoming more cautious around us rather than open.

When there is an issue that one could confront, it is good to first understand the issue internally, and then decide if this is an issue that?s worthy of addressing, or letting go.?Letting something go doesn?t mean that we should leave issues unresolved. On the contrary, it means that we choose?to actually?let it go,?without further need to confront. It?s those issues that we process internally that we are still are unable to resolve within ourselves that may need confrontation ? the issues where we can?t let go. However, if we find we?re having trouble letting go of issues on a regular basis, it?s possible that some outside help could be useful to understand our own internal process.

In every relationship or friendship, there comes a point when a person needs to make a decision to accept a person for his or her limitations, or decide to remove themselves from that person, if they are triggering constant emotional distress. Even if our every emotional need isn?t met in our relationships, using our confrontation skills in a healthy manner helps us to balance our relationships to where our primary needs are being met.

Proven Tips For Buying Insurance For Your Vehicle | Insurance in ...

Buying and maintaining auto insurance is imperative to protecting not only your vehicle but yourself, your passengers, pedestrians and other motorists. Although the vast majority of states require you to purchase a certain level of auto insurance, the minimums they set are often insufficient, and some people choose to ignore the law altogether. The following article provides you with important information on the different types of auto insurance and how it can adequately cover you in the event of an accident.

Insurance Quotes

One way to get good insurance rates on your car is to shop around and get insurance quotes from different companies. Different companies have different ways on how they calculate your insurance premium. By shopping around, you will be able to see the differences in rates.

Finding cheaper auto insurance is as easy as requesting insurance quotes. Requesting just one quote may not do the trick, but if you request several quotes online, you will probably find a substantial variance in the rates quoted by different providers.

If you have a spotty or poor driving history, you may want to wait a while before shopping around for auto insurance. In most states, traffic violations and accidents fall off your driving record after a set period of time. If you have violations or accidents close to falling off your driving record, consider waiting until they are gone before shopping around for new auto insurance quotes.

Auto Insurance

Raising your deductible is a great way to save money through your auto insurance. A higher deductible translates into a lower premium that you must pay. However, in the case of an accident, you are required to pay this deductible. Find the right balance between the two and drive safely to keep money in your pocket.

Compare costs when adding your teen to your auto insurance policy. You may currently be with a company who has the lowest rates to cover you and your spouse, but your insurance company may have much higher rates for teenage drivers than another company does. Doing the math after shopping around could save you a lot of money.

Do not settle for the first auto insurance company that you find. You may be missing out on special discounts or rewards. For instance, some insurance companies offer discounted premiums for accident-free drivers, or for people of certain professions. Some even give discounts to college students who maintain good grades.

Car Insurance

Be sure to keep your car secure. Keeping your car garaged, having a security alarm system, using a locking device on your steering wheel, having a professionally installed tracking system and living in a safe neighborhood are just a few of the ways you can save some money on your car insurance.

If your goal is to lower the cost of your car insurance premium, remember that insurance companies often charge more to insure cars that are flashier or that cost more to repair. Having a low-profile vehicle, that is unlikely to get stolen, can often dramatically lower your rates.

If you are trying to save on your auto insurance, increasing your deductible will give you the best savings. Most car insurance companies will charge a higher premium to the customer for the luxury of having a lower insurance deductible. If you choose a higher deductible, this will mean that you will pay higher out-of-pocket costs if you are involved in a car accident or if you need to file an insurance claim.

Shopping for auto insurance doesn?t have to be difficult. As you?ve seen, it?s important to arm yourself with the information you need to be able to make the right decision for your car, your age, and your circumstances as an auto owner. Now that you have that information in hand, your next auto insurance buying decision should be a much smarter one.

Find out more about auto insurance quotes that can help you choose the right auto insurance for your car.

Dallas suburb, undaunted by economy, to christen $60M high school football field of dreams

Call it the palace of high school football: A gleaming $60 million facility with seats for 18,000 roaring fans, a 38-foot-wide high-definition video screen, corporate sponsors and a towering upper deck.

Welcome to the new home of Eagles Football.

As school districts across the country struggle to retain teachers, replace outdated textbooks and keep class sizes from ballooning, the wealthy, burgeoning Dallas suburb of Allen is preparing to christen its new stadium with a sold-out Friday night matchup against defending state champions Southlake Carroll.

It's not the biggest high school stadium in football-mad Texas, but Eagle Stadium is the grandest, with a spacious weight room for the players and practice areas for Allen High School's wrestling and golf teams. The school district decided to build it in a down economy, knowing full well it will never recoup the costs.

It's a decision that local officials and team supporters defend, saying the stadium will serve as a community centerpiece and source of pride for years to come and will more than pay the costs of operating it.

"There will be kids that come through here that will be able to play on a field that only a few people will ever get the chance to play in," said Wes Bishop, the father of a junior linebacker on the team and head of the local booster club.

For longtime Allen fans, it's a giant step forward from a facility that district spokesman Tim Carroll called "inadequate in almost every way."

The old building opened in 1976, when Allen had fewer than 8,000 residents, with 7,000 permanent seats, one concession stand and one set of bathrooms. As the town grew to its current population of 87,000, the school had to add portable toilets and rent temporary bleachers, which added 7,000 seats at a cost of $250,000 a year, Carroll said.

Today, the high school has 4,000 students enrolled and a 700-member band that's among the biggest in the country. Collin County, which includes Allen and other Dallas suburbs, is one of the wealthiest areas of Texas ? and home to some of the state's top football teams.

About 63 percent of voters supported a $119 million bond package in 2009. Construction on the stadium began a year later. District officials went with more expensive concrete seating over all-aluminum benches, adding perhaps $4 million more to the cost, according to officials. But they said they expected this stadium to last decades.

"Our intention is not to recoup the money it cost to build the stadium," Carroll said. "It's not practical to say we'll get that money back. (But) the revenue we receive from the stadium will far exceed the cost of operating it."

While the district did not have estimates, Carroll said he expects the stadium to be competitive in hosting high school playoff games and other events. The school has also sold six sponsorships for about $35,000 a year, he said.

The new stadium revives an old argument in Texas about whether communities and their schools have their priorities straight.

In 1982, when the West Texas city of Odessa built a 19,000-seat stadium for a then-unheard-of $5.6 million, it drew scorn from some people who questioned the district's priorities. Odessa would be featured a few years later in the book "Friday Night Lights," a national best-seller that inspired a movie and a TV series.

Ross Perot, the billionaire businessman and former presidential candidate, repeatedly took aim at his home state's football culture as he pushed the state to shed extracurricular activities and increase accountability measures.

"Do we want our kids to win on Friday night on the football field or do we want them to win all through their lives?" Perot said in a 1988 Washington Post column. "That's what we have to start asking ourselves."

Today, neighboring Plano High School's stadium seats more than 14,000 people. Mesquite, about 30 miles away from Allen, has a 20,000-seat stadium. And the Berry Center, a suburban Houston facility with a stadium, an arena and theater, opened in 2006 and cost about $84 million.

"In a couple of years, someone's going to do something that's bigger and bigger," said Robert McSpadden, who runs the high school football site TexasBob.com.

Officials in Allen reject the premise that they're focusing on sports over academics. The bonds approved three years ago also funded a new performing arts center, and Carroll said extra revenue from stadium operations will go into the district general fund. Allen's student test scores are also largely stellar.

But for now, Eagle Stadium is gaining wide notoriety. The No. 8-ranked Eagles' Friday game against Southlake Carroll, which won a state championship last year and is ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press' Class 5A preseason poll this season, sold out in just over a day. More than 2,000 people are expected to watch from standing-room areas.

Bishop's son Zack, a linebacker, said he and his teammates already noticed differences: a more spacious weight room, a softer playing field.

"It's going to be really incredible to step out in front of a full house and a sold-out game," he said.

Chris Wallace, whose oldest son is a senior quarterback, said she had to reassure him when they visited smaller colleges over the summer with older facilities.

"In his mind, this is it," she said. "He can't even believe it's here already."

And there's always room for growth.

Fred Montes, one of the architects of what he called "an incredible project," said the district's master plan left open the possibility for more construction, if needed.

"The end zone that has seats currently can be expanded," he said. "And on the visitors' side, you can always put a deck."

Mums@Work Singapore ? Tipping the Scales of Balance

?- decided to cancel a biz meeting (which led to loss of a biz deal), because my toddler woke up late for school. Spent the morning with her at a nearby park, had a lunch of forbidden hot-dogs & loads of fun. As I dropped her off @ school for the rest of the day, her ?Thank you Mummy? made me realise that sometimes to achieve that work-family balance, you got to give up on some things. And is it worth it? Yep! Yep! Yep!?

So read my Facebook Status update, a day after the Prime Minister had delivered his National Day Rally Speech. PM Lee Hsien Loong spoke about the Singapore government?s plans to encourage marriage and parenthood. He brought up the case of the female teacher, with 4 children who mentioned her desire for work-life balance, and yet felt that it was not for the government to give. She probably spoke on behalf of many mothers in Singapore.

As PM Lee highlighted, there are likely to be initiatives targeting employers to encourage more practices that support work-life balance in the next few months. Flexible Work Arrangements could possibly be encouraged through financial grants or somewhat similar options. The civil service could lead by example and showing how Flexible Work Arrangements can be implemented in an organization.

Yet, the question remains: Are financial incentives sufficient?

Some of the most successful flexible work arrangements I have personally come across are not established officially. It is a mutually-agreed upon decision made between a supervisor and his/ her team member. When questioned why the arrangement has to be done on such hush-hush terms, the answer usually ties back to the fear of more employees requesting for the same. How can top management view Flexible Work Arrangement less negatively?

It is really mindset change that is required in order for work-life balance to be achieved. After all, how many converts can a ?Let?s not laugh at our colleague who leaves work on time? campaign create?

Rather than just offering money, the government can look at ways to educate employers on how Flexible Work Arrangements can be a win-win situation for both employer and employee. Create genuinely helpful platforms whereby employers can seek help in offering flexible work arrangement positions. Set up technological support teams that facilitate work-from-home arrangements.

The rules can be in place ? but these are issues that are intangible and would take a much longer time to change. PM Lee rightfully said that it is not money that is the question here, but values and deep motivation.

To strike a balance is defined as ?to make a compromise?. In essence, work-life balance is about compromise. Parents need to ask themselves: What can you give up to achieve what you want? And more importantly, what do you want?

I have often met stay at home mothers that gave up their careers to look after their children. Their roles are often downplayed. Looking at many of the current parenthood incentives, one would think that a woman gets penalized for ??taking a few years out from her career, to start a family.? Yet, many stay at home mothers often speak of the joys of motherhood. Highlighting their personal stories ? their positive experience of a fulfilled family life could also be great inspiration. Incentives that benefit stay at home mothers can also be considered, if the real goal of higher fertility rate is to be reached.

I lost my business deal because of the last minute cancellation, but I got quality time with my 4 year old daughter. To me, that tip of the scales, to achieve momentary balance was worth it. ?

What babies eat after birth likely determines lifetime risk of metabolic mischief and obesity, rat studies suggest

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Rats born to mothers fed high-fat diets but who get normal levels of fat in their diets right after birth avoid obesity and its related disorders as adults, according to new Johns Hopkins research. Meanwhile, rat babies exposed to a normal-fat diet in the womb but nursed by rat mothers on high-fat diets become obese by the time they are weaned.

The experiments suggest that what mammalian babies -- including humans -- get to eat as newborns and young children may be more important to their metabolic future than exposure to unhealthy nutrition in the womb, the Hopkins scientists say.

"Our research confirms that exposure to a high-fat diet right after birth has significant consequences for obesity," says Kellie L.K. Tamashiro, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and leader of the study published online in the journal Diabetes. "But it also suggests that by putting children on a healthy diet in infancy and early childhood, we can intervene and potentially prevent a future of obesity, diabetes and heart disease."

Obesity has become a worldwide public health problem that often leads to many other disorders, such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and arthritis. A significant concern in Western society is the consumption of modern diets high in fat: Rates of obesity are skyrocketing, costing the health care system billions and reducing longevity.

In the Johns Hopkins experiments, newborn baby rats exposed to a high-fat diet through the breast milk of rat mothers fed high amounts of fat were more likely to gain excessive weight, have impaired tolerance to glucose (a sign of prediabetes) and become insensitive to the hormone leptin, which regulates appetite and body weight in humans and rodents and can be disrupted in obese mammals. Leptin, secreted by fat cells, signals how much fat is around and controls food intake; obese people often are insensitive to the signals, for reasons so far unclear.

To compare the impact on offspring obesity of prenatal versus postnatal exposure to a maternal high-fat diet, Tamashiro and her team began by feeding half of the pregnant rats a high-fat diet and half a normal diet. After birth, half of the offspring of the high-fat moms were given to the normal-diet moms to nurse and vice versa. Those exposed to a high-fat diet both before and after birth (through breast milk) gained more weight and were obese by the time they were weaned, as were those who were only nursed by rats on a high-fat diet. Those born to mothers on a high-fat diet but nursed by rats on a normal diet did not suffer the same fate.

Tamashiro and her colleagues currently are trying to determine whether exercise in early rat development, the equivalent of elementary school age in humans, can reverse the effects of exposure to a high-fat diet.

"These animals -- like children -- are still developing and responding to their environment, and, as much as possible, we want to make sure they develop properly so bad health consequences don't occur," she says.

While the findings are important steps in understanding how prenatal and postnatal environments affect development, Tamashiro cautions that data from rats don't directly translate into human application.

Still, Tamashiro says, obstetricians may be on the right track as they rethink guidelines for pregnant women. Many suggest that obese women limit weight gain during pregnancy by reducing fat and calories. Obese mothers who switch to healthier diets during pregnancy and then maintain them while nursing may be able to help their children avoid the road to obesity, Tamashiro says.

"Obesity rates have increased threefold over the last 20 years," she says. "We know it's not because of genetics because our genes don't change that quickly. So we are focusing on the developmental environment. Obese children are developing metabolic disorders earlier, affecting their quality of life and health over the long term. Prevention is probably the best strategy we have."

Other Johns Hopkins researchers involved in the study include Bo Sun, M.D.; Jianqun Yan, M.D., Ph.D.; and Timothy H. Moran, Ph.D.

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (DK-077623) and the NIH's National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (HD-055030).

WATCHING THE SHOW: Get real, whatever that means

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Presidential candidates are like a good Bordeaux, says Samuel Popkin, who has studied them (the candidates, that is). Winemakers use every cutting-edge scientific technique to perfect wines for modern palates. Then they sell them as the authentic product of age-old values and unchanging practice.

So, too, for modern candidates. Authenticity is essential. Once you can package that, the rest is easy.

"How can a candidate exemplify authenticity and sincerity when they constantly confer with pollsters, writers and media experts to 'decide' what they truly mean?" asks Popkin, an adviser to several Democratic presidential candidates and a professor of Political Science at the University of California in San Diego.

Nowhere during a campaign does this dilemma come across more directly than political conventions, where supporters, family and finally the candidate himself speak "from the heart" while following a carefully managed script on a heavily produced stage to one of the largest audiences they will ever have.

In an age of something called reality TV ? of a public that demands to be brought inside to see the unscripted choice of dancing stars and American idols ? how can a political leader communicate authenticity when the very act of communicating requires authenticity-crushing packaging?

David Shimkin, a delegate from New York, says he admires New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie because "he doesn't seem to have a filter." That frankness is a big part of how he became a Republican star and won the coveted keynote address. But Christie, who usually speaks off the cuff, gave his keynote from a text, edited by the Romney campaign, to make sure he stayed on message and on time.

Christie said his challenge, in fact, was "to be natural" in what for him (and most people) was an unnatural setting.

After a political generation that put great stock on production values in political presentation, there is a rump movement to reinvent conventions to make them less produced. But when it comes to authenticity, the production values are only the beginning of what candidates need to worry about.

___

LIKE MODERN warfare, presidential campaigns are asymmetrical, says Popkin, whose new book, "The Candidate," examines what it takes to win ? and hold ? the White House. Popkin and his colleague Matt Childers studied every presidential campaign from 1952 to 2004 and found a clear pattern.

Incumbents are judged by what they have done or failed to do, while challengers are measured by who they are and their vision of what needs to be done.

This would appear to be a problem for both sides in this election.

Next week in Charlotte, President Barack Obama, who was effective as a candidate when the question was who he was and what he would do, will have to explain why he should get another term when unemployment is 8.3 percent. But this week Romney, who has a track record he loves to talk about, will have to explain who he is and what he would do.

His staff admits that isn't exactly his thing.

Romney "doesn't feel comfortable talking about himself. He's just not built that way," said Neil Newhouse, a Romney polltaker. Instead, "what you'll see," said Newhouse, "is other people talking about him and filling in the blanks."

Foremost among these representatives was his wife, Ann, who has been working hard to introduce voters to her marriage and her husband. This included her speech to the convention as well as several television appearances. In one, she described in some detail her miscarriages.

In this, she follows a recent tradition of providing what some might consider too much information. John Edwards cried for his dead child. Al Gore kissed his wife Tipper, perhaps a bit too passionately (and also did the Macarena from the podium, perhaps not quite passionately enough). And Michelle Obama spoke of her husband's bad breath.

Why do they do this? Because authenticity matters, and yet it is a fuzzy concept. So knowing how to demonstrate it is tricky.

"Authenticity is a claim, not a fact. And the candidate must persuade people the claim is true," Popkin says. For some voters, personal qualities are the deciding factor. Asked what one factor would most sway their decision about whom to support in November, 16 percent of persuadable voters in an AP-GfK poll cited some form of authenticity ? such as honesty, sticking to positions, accountability or values. That ranks it as the most important candidate attribute and ahead of most issues.

"I think I'm like most Americans. I'm very excited to learn more about him as the man, as the dad, as the husband," says North Carolina delegate Donna Williams. "To me, I think that tells a lot about a person and their character as far as what they've done in their life."

___

BUT EVEN for voters who say they put issues first, personal qualities matter. For example, Popkin notes that a candidate can change his mind ? the dreaded flip-flop ? so long as voters believe the candidate's explanation. Put another way, a candidate can change position but not principles.

While log cabins and coonskin hats were part of American politics from the republic's earliest decades, the intense focus on the personal is not a tradition.

"It is a fairly recent thing that we expect political leaders to drone on about their life stories in these major speeches," says Michael Waldman, a former speech writer for President Clinton.

"Kennedy conveyed who he was by talking about the New Frontier at Los Angeles in 1960, not by dramatically recounting PT-109. Roosevelt talked about the New Deal and would have been aghast at the idea that he should talk about how polio shaped his sensibility."

But something about our modern culture has created an appetite for personal information. "Authenticity is overrated as a virtue for leaders," Waldman says. "It's a peculiar aspect of American politics, since we combine the head of government and the head of state."

Nomiki Konst, a Democrat who ran unsuccessfully for congress in Arizona, sees the real problem as this: Modern politics has been peddling what she calls "perfectly constructed authentic candidates." Her phrase conjures the image of Chauncey Gardner, the fictional character who knew nothing and said little but, by just "Being There," became the vessel for everyone's dreams and beliefs, ultimately becoming president.

Voters, says Konst, are really yearning for candidates who are willing to lead without the constant fear of offending constituents or fundraisers. "When you're in a crisis, no amount of data mining, polling and market research will get you out of that crisis," she said. And boldness? That, she says, would be real authenticity.

Pentagon Picks 3 Contenders to Replace the Humvee

For years the U.S. Army has been trying to build a replacement for the Humvees that have been hauling around gear and troops since the early 1980s. But the process has gotten continually bogged down in delays and cost overruns; the government nearly quashed the entire effort before the Army and Marine Corps cut down how much it would cost.

With the program saved, on Friday the Army announced the three finalists for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). The Oshkosh Corporation, Lockheed Martin (seen above), and AM General (which makes the Humvee) received contracts good for a combined $185 million to spend the next 27 months competing to be the final vehicle chosen. The U.S. Army intends to buy at least 20,000 JLTVs, Army Times reports, from among the four variants that the winning contractor will have to build. The Marines would buy another 5000 or more.

Of course, there's still time for the Pentagon to change course and choose the Popular Mechanics Light Tactical Vehicle, the result of our attempt to cook up the ideal military jeep.

Isaac prompts hurricane warnings from La. to Fla.

MIAMI (AP) ? Hurricane warnings have been issued for an area stretching from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle as Isaac churns toward the Gulf Coast.

The warnings stretched from east of Morgan City, La. ? which includes the New Orleans area ? to Destin, Fla.

Isaac lashed the Florida Keys as a tropical storm on Sunday, bringing rain and strong winds. But residents for the most part took it in stride. However, preparations have begun farther north as forecasters warn Isaac could be a strong Category 2 hurricane by the time it reaches the Gulf Coast.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Isaac is expected to hit somewhere between southeastern Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle either late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Be sure to record your spending over a set time period so that you can observe where the bulk of your money is spent. Armed with the facts of how your money comes and goes, you will be able to devise a plan to eliminate unwise purchases and maximize savings.

Making sound, responsible financial decisions begins by avoiding debt whenever possible. Taking a loan for a car or a house is acceptable, as long as you can afford it. You should not depend on the use of credit cards to get you by day to day.

Shopping at thrift stores is something anyone can do. It is possible to find real savings on great merchandise including furniture, clothes and home decor at lots of thrift stores. There is a lot of interesting items for children too and it makes it fun for them to go shopping there. Be sure you?re shopping early in the morning to get the best variety.

Create a budget and strictly stick to it. You may assume you are spending your money wisely, but there is a chance that you?re spending beyond your means. Record your every transaction, even the most minor one. Review the entire log when the month draws to a close. That way, you will know when to cut back.

Swap out your old incandescent light bulbs with the highly-efficient new compact florescent lamps. This will help you save the environment money on your electric bill. CFL blubs were specially made to last a much longer period of time than a normal bulb would. With the reduced rate of replacement, you won?t have to spend as much.

Work with your bank to establish an automated monthly savings plan that moves regularly scheduled sums from your checking to your savings. This is an excellent strategy which helps you to manage your money much better each month. This technique can also be helpful for accruing money for expensive events, such as a wedding.

If you want to save money while traveling, eat at local places rather than tourist restaurants. The restaurants in hotels and tourist areas tend to overprice their food, that is why it is good to research on places on where locals eat. This is a great way to find authentic food at a budget-friendly price.

Saving a little every day can be compared to eating an apple a day; save a little every day to keep debt away. You may wish to draw upon your savings for a much-needed vacation or a new flat-screen TV. Of course, you can?t go wrong by putting away some money for your retirement. Whatever you want the money for, saving on a regular basis is sensible.

Think about how you really feel about financial matters. If you want your personal finance to improve, you have to take into account how you?re spending your money first. Take the time to write down your feelings about money and possessions, and do your best to understand where those feelings come from. Take the time to reflect on your relation to money and material possessions; perhaps you could make changes to your lifestyle and be happier.

It might be smarter to establish an emergency fund prior to paying off existing debt. Consider common costly occurrences when considering how much to put in the fund.

Invest in a small accordion style envelope and always have it on hand. Put every business card or receipt you receive into this envelope. You want to hold on to these so you have a record later. Although, the chance is small that you?ll be double charged, having the receipts will make it easier to see on your credit card statement.

If you are under 21 and want a credit card, be aware that the rules have changed in recent years. In the past, it was very easy for a college student to get a credit card. Today you need to have someone co-sign on your account unless you have a verified income. Realize what requirements you need before applying for a card.

Try working with the company that does your insurance to lower your payments. This can save a lot of money for you and your family. You can check with your insurance company about different options, such as bundling and eliminating unnecessary coverage. You can easily save a lot on your costs this way.

Check your credit report regularly. You have the ability to check into your credit report free of charge. Do this twice per year so that no unauthorized charges appear and to prevent I.D. theft.

Are you running your non-profit like a business to secure funding ...

Are you running your non-profit like a business to secure funding?

If you aren?t, then you better be.

The reason why I was hired for my last role in non-profit was because of my background in business and funding.

Understanding that my board had a specific direction that they wanted me to take the organisation in, I sought to canvas our stakeholders for their views on some of the new business practices I was implementing. The responses were very similar as there was a widely held view that allocating budgets to areas like technology upgrades, staff training and outsourced answer services is money taken away from the cause. Yet these were the very same stakeholders that would complain if staff were too busy to answer phones, or were unable to extract historical reports because the data was hidden somewhere amongst thousands of spreadsheets. So despite stakeholder views, I made the unpopular decision to follow the maxim ? you?ve got to spend money to make money.

I am not suggesting that nonprofits compromise their passion for their missions or values. In fact, it?s that very passion and focus on helping people that is the driving force behind non-profit organisations.

In today?s climate volunteers, donors and funders want to sure that their time and money investment is sound. So what does that mean?

For nonprofits, attracting volunteers and financial funding means:

    ??Being transparent and accountable
    ??Tracking, measuring and reporting results
    ??Professionalising marketing and development efforts
    ??Having web presence
    ??Active brand promotion

Yes you have to spend money in order to make the above changes, but it?s money well spent if spent wisely.

Would you personally invest heavily in a business you couldn?t find out much about? Neither do funders ?as a minimum they get to see financial records but the anecdotal evidence suggests that the non-profits who are also able to show that they follow a succesful business model that illustrates the above key points have a far greater hit-rate for funding and grants. ??

TalkGwinnett.com ? Obama Immigration Policy Makes Some Illegal ...

Under Georgia law, new immigrants who are pending action on their cases are eligible to receive a state driver?s license. The law is intended to expedite a legal immigrant?s assimilation into the community. However, under President Obama?s recent action giving deferred status to millions of aliens here illegally, those in Georgia could become eligible for a license unless Governor Nathan Deal acts.

Under the [Obama] policy ? which was announced in June and took effect last week ? eligible immigrants must have arrived in the U.S. before their 16th birthday, are 30 or younger, have lived here at least five years, and are in school or graduated or served in the military. They also must not have a criminal record or otherwise pose a safety threat. They can apply to stay in the country and be granted a work permit for two years, but they would not be granted citizenship.

D.A. King, director of The Dustin Inman Society, an organization promoting legal immigration policies, has called on readers of his site to contact Governor Deal and encourage him to prevent government agencies from issuing the licenses:

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed an executive order Aug. 15, the day the policy took effect, telling state agencies not to give driver?s licenses or other benefits to illegal immigrants who obtain work authorizations under the deferred status.

Governor Deal?s office, according to King, can be contacted at 404-656-1776 or online here.

    Source

Epidemiology Research Program, American Cancer Society, Atlanta, GA, 30303-1002, USA, marji.mccullough@cancer.org.

    Abstract

    PURPOSE:

The World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research identified a probable role for garlic in colorectal cancer prevention?based?on preclinical?evidence?and epidemiologic studies, but prospective data are limited. The purpose of this paper was to contribute additional?evidence?on this topic for men and women in a large prospective cohort study.

    METHODS:

In 1999, 42,824 men and 56,876 women in the Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort completed a questionnaire with information on dietary garlic consumption. Garlic supplement use was assessed in 2001. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard rate ratios (HRs) and 95?% confidence intervals (CIs).

    RESULTS:

During 7?years of follow-up, 579 men and 551 women were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Among men, daily garlic consumption was associated with a non-significant higher colorectal cancer risk (HR?=?1.04, 95?% CI 0.99-1.08 for each additional clove or "4 shakes" of garlic per week), whereas the association was borderline inverse in women (HR?=?0.95, 95?% CI 0.91-1.00, p heterogeneity by sex?=?0.03). Garlic supplement use was not related to a lower risk of colorectal cancer, and in men, former use was associated with a higher risk of colorectal cancer (HR?=?1.85, 95?% CI 1.13-3.03).

    CONCLUSIONS:

These results provide weak support for a role of dietary garlic consumption in colorectal cancer prevention in women, but a possible increased risk in men. Further research is needed to confirm different associations by sex.

Court strikes down graphic warnings for cigarettes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday struck down a law that requires tobacco companies to use graphic health warnings, such as of a man exhaling smoke through a hole in his throat.

The 2-1 decision by the court in Washington, D.C., contradicts another appeals court's ruling in a similar case earlier this year, setting up the possibility the U.S. Supreme Court will weigh in on the dispute.

The court's majority in the latest ruling found the label requirement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration violated corporate speech rights.

"This case raises novel questions about the scope of the government's authority to force the manufacturer of a product to go beyond making purely factual and accurate commercial disclosures and undermine its own economic interest -- in this case, by making 'every single pack of cigarettes in the country mini billboard' for the government's anti-smoking message," wrote Judge Janice Rogers Brown of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

The FDA "has not provided a shred of evidence" showing that the graphic labels would reduce smoking, Brown added.

Five tobacco companies representing most of the major cigarette makers in the United States challenged the FDA rules: Reynolds American Inc, Lorillard Inc; Commonwealth Brands Inc, which is owned by Britain's Imperial Tobacco Group Plc; Liggett Group LLC and Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co Inc.

The FDA has argued the images of rotting teeth and diseased lungs are accurate and necessary to warn consumers -- especially teenagers -- about the risks of smoking.

The health agency said on Friday that it does not comment on possible, pending or ongoing litigation. The U.S. Department of Justice, which argued the case for the FDA, said it needs to review the ruling before deciding on next steps.

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, which has vigorously supported stricter cigarette laws, urged the government to appeal.

"Today's ruling is wrong on the science and law, and it is by no means the final word on the new cigarette warnings," said Matthew Myers, the group's president, in a statement.

    YOUTH EPIDEMIC

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates some 45 million U.S. adults smoke cigarettes, which are the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. And the World Health Organization predicts smoking could kill 8 million people each year by 2030 if governments do not do more to help people quit.

The U.S. Surgeon General warned in March that youth smoking has reached epidemic proportions, as one in four U.S. high school seniors is a regular cigarette smoker, paving the way to a lifetime of addiction.

Judge Judith Rogers, who wrote the dissenting opinion, said the FDA warnings were factual, and necessary to counter tobacco companies' history of deceptive advertising.

"The government has an interest of paramount importance in effectively conveying information about the health risks of smoking to adolescent would-be smokers and other consumers," she wrote.

Congress passed a law in 2009 that gave the FDA broad powers to regulate the tobacco industry, including imposing the label regulation. The law requires color warning labels big enough to cover the top 50 percent of a cigarette pack's front and back panels, and the top 20 percent of print advertisements.

The FDA released nine new warnings in June 2011 that were meant to go into effect this September, the first change in U.S. cigarette warning labels in 25 years. Cigarette packs already carry text warnings from the U.S. Surgeon General.

The ruling against the FDA means tobacco companies will likely not have to comply with the requirements for now, given divergent court rulings.

The U.S. Appeals Court for the 6th Circuit, based in Cincinnati, upheld the bulk of the FDA's new tobacco regulations in March, including the requirement for warning images on cigarette packs.

The difference in the two cases is that the FDA had not introduced the specific images when the companies filed the 6th Circuit suit. While the Washington suit focused on the images, the appeals court in Cincinnati addressed the larger issue of the FDA's regulatory power.

Most countries in the European Union already carry graphic images to illustrate the health risks of smoking. Earlier this month, Australia took a further step to limit smoking advertising by banning company logos on cigarette packs, and the EU said it was considering a similar ban.

Star Cluster Creates Coat Hanger in Night Sky This Week

During the Perseid meteor shower this month I did some reminiscing on how, as a teenager, I used to watch this famous meteor display from my Aunt Irma and Uncle Ron?s house in then-rural Mahopac, New York, about 50 miles north of New York City.

In the early 1970s the northern suburbs of New York were amazingly dark ? much darker then compared to now ? and whenever I visited my Aunt and Uncle I always made sure to bring my binoculars or telescope with me, because their night skies provided a treasure-trove of celestial sights that I could never hope to see from my light-polluted home base in The Bronx. ?

And on one of those memorable midsummer nights, some 40 years ago, I stumbled across one of the most pleasing night sky sights for those using binoculars. It can be found this week nearly overhead in our late evening sky. With a bright moon currently out of the way, now is a good time to seek it out.

    A coat hangar in space

Most amateur astronomers have heard of such beautiful open star clusters as the Pleiades, Hyades and the Beehive. But have you ever heard of the Coat Hanger? ?

Some evening this week, if you turn your binoculars east-southeast and look? midway up from the horizon to the region of the sky roughly halfway between the bright stars Vega and Altair you will discover Brocchi's Cluster in the rather dim and nondescript constellation of Vulpecula, the Little Fox. During the 1920s, Dalmiro F. Brocchi, then a well-known chart maker for the American Association of Variable Star Observers, designed a star chart depicting the region of the sky around Vulpecula, revealing this cluster.

For reasons that I have never been able to fathom, Brocchi?s Cluster is rarely mentioned in most popular astronomy books. Yet, it is the brightest of all the star clusters in this part of the sky! In Swedish astronomer Per Collinder?s star catalogue, which was drawn up in 1931, it is cluster No. 399, hence its ?official designation as Collinder 399.

Those who have seen it have described it as a rather curious grouping of about a dozen tiny stars looking very much like an inverted coat hanger. In a clear, dark sky you might even perceive it with the naked eye as a fuzzy patch of light imbedded within the summer star clouds of the Milky Way. This is one object that is best suited for binoculars; even a small telescope will provide too much magnification and will cause the stars to appear too widely spaced apart.?? ?

    Cosmic ladle or celestial seesaw?

Forty years ago while sweeping up and down the Milky Way with 7 x 35 binoculars, this delightful little cluster first hit my eyes. But actually, because the coat hanger figure appears upside down and a bit on a tilt, my original impression of it of it resembled some sort of a ladle (and since I was visiting my Aunt Irma when I made the discovery, I unofficially christened it "Irma?s Ladle"). ?

Interestingly, what we are seeing in this pattern of stars is an illusion of perspective. This is not a true cluster at all, but rather just a chance alignment of stars that are placed at very different distances from our earthly vantage point.

However ? Collinder 399? is really a proper coat hanger only for Southern Hemisphere observers, where it appears right side up. It is for this reason, that not everyone sees Collinder 399 as a coat hanger. In fact, I once heard of one gentleman out in California who independently discovered it and later inquired as to "Why is this fulcrum never shown on star charts? It is a beautiful sight."

And indeed, now that I?ve mentioned this allusion, it may cause many to see this cluster not as a coat hanger, but as a seesaw!
